Design and features
The HyperMegaTech Super Pocket Atari Edition features a red plastic shell and a black faceplate. There’s a 2.8-inch IPS screen up top with a circular D-pad and four main control buttons (A, B, X, Y) below it. There is also a menu, select and start buttons, a speaker, and an Atari logo.
When you flip the Super Pocket over, you’ll find four shoulder buttons for added play control options for some games, along with a rocker to adjust the volume.
There’s also an Evercade cartridge slot, so you can expand your library of games. Unfortunately, they didn’t include any cartridges for me to test this feature, but you can buy them directly from hypermegatech.com, where they have a large selection of cartridges. This is a great feature that lets you extend the device’s playability, preventing it from becoming boring.
The bottom edge of the device has a 3.5mm headphone jack, power switch, USB-C charging port, and indicator lights.
Slide the power switch to on and you’re greeted with a rotating carousel of 50 games. There are classics from the Atari 2600 which I had back in the day, along with games from the Atari 5200, 7800, Atari arcade, and the Atari Lynx handheld.
I recognized classics like Centipede, Asteroids, Missile Command, Pong (of course), Miner 2049’er, and my all-time favorite Super Breakout. I love Super Breakout, but using a D-pad instead of a paddle-style controller just doesn’t feel right. To see the complete list of games included in this handheld, visit this page and scroll down about halfway.
If you’re of a certain age and remember these games, it’ll be an instant blast of nostalgia when you see the blocky graphics and hear the monotonous tunes as you play these games from the ’70s and ’80s.
I’m 61 and didn’t have an issue with the size of the display, but some Boomer and GenX eyes might strain to see the small details.
Unlike playing games back when these games were new, the Super Pocket Atari Edition allows you to save your place in each game. Up to 4 different slots per game.
These games are simplistic, but that’s what made and still makes them fun to play today. Moving little characters across the display with a press of your thumb on the D-pad brought me right back to sitting cross-legged on my bed, playing games for hours at a time, and seeing the game images under my eyelids as I tried to go to sleep. Fun times!

Final thoughts
The HyperMegaTech Super Pocket Atari Edition nails the fun factor for anyone who loves classic gaming and wants a blast from the past in a portable package. With 50 built-in Atari arcade and console classics, game save slots, and support for Evercade cartridges, it truly shines for quick game sessions or long walks down memory lane.
The physical design is sturdy, lightweight, with a bright screen and easy-to-press controls. While the battery life could be longer and the D-pad isn’t perfect for paddle games, those small quirks don’t spoil the fun. If you’re a retro fan or want to introduce the golden age of gaming to someone new, the Super Pocket Atari delivers excellent value at a wallet-friendly price.
