The Amazon Kindle better watch out because Sony has just announced the Reader Daily Edition. It has a 7 inch touch 16 level grayscale display. You might say that it’s just another ebook reader, so who cares. But this reader offers 3G connectivity via AT&T, Mac compatible Library software and the ability to wirelessly check books out of local libraries for FREE.
Sony’s new Library Finder application offers Sony eBook Store visitors access to their local library’s collection of eBooks. Thousands of libraries in the OverDrive network offer eBooks optimized for the Sony Reader and now visitors can find these libraries by typing their zip code into the Library Finder. Through the selected library’s download website, visitors can check out eBooks with a valid library card, download them to a PC and transfer them to their Reader. At the end of the library’s lending period, eBooks expire, so there are never any late fees. The Reader Daily Edition will be available in December for $399.

Looks very nice.
Now if only they would offer daily newspapers and monthly mag subs as well.
But don’t you still have to pay for the 3G service itself? The one nice thing about the Kindle is that its wireless service is free and you can at least download mobi-pocket format books for free as well.
Also, I would wonder if they have addressed the glaring (yet often overlooked) problem with the Kindle: the inability to categorize your books into subdiectories, not to mention decent support for PDF format. (Supposedly the Kindle DX supports native PDF files but I’ve seen grumblings about its quality.)
@CJ Rox According to the press release:
So no fees for the 3G service 🙂
