REVIEW – I am always on the lookout for my new favorite minimalist wallet. Unlike many women, I don’t carry a purse or large bag when I’m out running errands. Many times, I like to carry my wallet in my jeans or jacket pocket, and for that reason, I don’t want a huge George Costanza-sized wallet. The newest wallet that I’ve had the chance to try is the Puncube Mech Wallet, which is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. Let’s check it out.

What is it?

The Puncube Mech Wallet is an aluminum minimalist wallet designed to hold your five most used cards.

Design and features

The Puncube Mech Wallet is made of 6063 aluminum alloy. The wallet weighs in at 1.8 oz (52g) and is only 0.31 inches (0.8 cm) thick.

Puncube’s Kickstarter is offering the Mech wallet in three different styles. The style that they sent me is called Wasteland and will be available in four colors (Mine, Space, Bog, and Desert). I was sent the Mine color, which, as you can see, looks like raw titanium.

The wallet has a capacity of up to five non-embossed plastic credit cards and up to four embossed cards. The cards load into the wallet horizontally, as you see in the image above, and are held in place by friction.

Inside each Puncube Mech Wallet is a specially designed car lifting mechanism. The Wasteland version of the Mech Wallet has an addictive ratcheting feel when you side the top surface of the wallet upward to lift/eject the cards.

When the action is done, all the cards lift out of the slot in a fanned layout that makes it easy to retrieve the desired card. Check out the video below to see how it works.

What I like about the Puncube Mech Wallet

  • Addicting fidget factor
  • Choice of designs
  • Well made

What needs to be improved?

  • The lift mechanism on my prototype wallet was a bit “sticky”

Final thoughts

The Puncube Mech Wallet is an interesting minimalist wallet. I know that wallets with this type of lifting mechanism are not new. I just reviewed the Groove Life wallet, which is similar. But Puncube offers more interesting styles and colors that make their wallets a bit more “fun” that other brands. As long as Puncube can fix the lifting action to make it flawless, I think they have a winner on their hands. Once they send me a set of production wallets, I’ll do an update to let you know if the Mech Wallet becomes my new favorite.
