Design and features
The DigiEra SSD is ultra portable. It’s not much smaller than the diameter of your favorite soda can. The top of the case feels like it’s glass, and the rest is metal, which not only makes it feel like a premium product, but it also helps with heat dissipation.
The bottom of the SSD has a soft, slightly rubberized covering that prevents scratches when attached to the back of your iPhone or Android phone. Note that the device is completely encapsulated so that you can’t disassemble it.
To use it with your phone (or any other device), you attach one end of the included USB-C to USB-C cable to the DigiEra SSD and the other end to the USB-C port on your phone, laptop, or desktop PC.
Here’s the DigiEra attached to the back of my iPhone 16 Pro Max. The built-in magnets in the DigiEra provide a strong hold to the back of the iPhone.
As soon as I plugged the USB-C cable into the iPhone, it detected it. It also lights up (see the first image in this review) when it’s connected to another device.
Going into the stock Files app, the DigiEra shows up a new location/drive called “Untitled.”
Going into the settings for the drive, you can see that it’s preformatted as ExFat with a capacity of 2.05 TB. It’s weird that it shows as being created in 1969, though! 😉
One of the main reasons why people use an SSD with their iPhone is to use it when shooting ProRes because it takes up so much file space. But with the DigiEra, you can tell the camera app to bypass your iPhone’s internal storage and save it directly on the SSD. Note that you’ll need an iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max or newer iPhone to take advantage of this feature.
Of course, you can also copy files to and from the SSD and your phone, laptop, or computer just like any other external storage device.
Using and testing the DigiEra LPS2000M MagSafe portable SSD
I did my testing with the DigiEra, my iPhone 16 Pro Max, and my 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro.
I used a free macOS app called Blackmagic Disk Speed Test to perform a speed test. The screenshot above shows the results for the DigiEra 2TB SSD formatted as exFAT. As you can see, the read/write speeds of the SSD were nowhere near the touted speeds of:
Read speed of up to 2000MB/s
Write speed of up to 1800MB/s
For the next test, I tested the read/write speeds with the DigiEra connected to my iPhone 16 Pro Max using the free OWC Drive Speed app.
The first test used the default settings of an H.264 1080p video file and as you can see, there was one dropped frame.
The next text used a ProRes 4K video and wow, there were 230 dropped frames. Ouch! Not good. Considering that many people use SSDs for the prime reason of recording ProRes video, this doesn’t make the DigiEra SSD very appealing.

Speed tests are all well and good, but what about a real world test? I connected the DigiEra to my iPhone and captured a 2 minute 4K 60FPS ProRes video of me walking around my office, up the stairs, around the first level of my house and back down to the office (all hand holding the iPhone). Then I did the same thing with a 2 minute 4K 120FPS ProRes video. Then, I watched each video through the Files app on the iPhone. Both looked smooth, with no noticeable stutters or dropped frames.
I then connected the SSD to my MacBook and watched the videos on my large monitor. Again, no noticeable dropped frames.
I should make it clear that I’m not a professional filmmaker. Heck, I never use ProRes to begin with. But to my untrained eyes, the video footage captured directly to the DigiEra SSD looked just fine. I can’t really upload the video files to YouTube or Gadgeteer, so you can watch them yourselves because the videos are 25 and 45 GB. It would take a week to upload them with my home internet speeds.
Final thoughts
Even though speed tests with the DigiEra SSD didn’t match their claimed speeds when used with my devices, I have no complaints about using this SSD to capture ProRes video with my iPhone, and I have no issues using it as an external drive with my MacBook. The size of this 2 TB SSD is great, and it will make a nice travel companion or even just an extra drive for my MacBook when I need to copy files from machine to machine.
