REVIEW – Phone “holders” have become almost mandatory for some folks. Larger screens and the eternal need for one-handed operation necessitates something to prevent gravity from snatching that thousand-dollar slab of glass out of your hand. There are established brands that are out there, but it’s always interesting to find a “new kid” who may bring a subtle change to the market. Benks included their Aurora-patterned MagClap Phone Grip & Stand with two cases they sent for review, and I liked it enough to give it a stand-alone review. Why? Well, you’ll have to read on for that!

Design and features

The MagClap Phone Grip & Stand is a disc 2.325” in diameter with a strong magnetic attachment. The back of the disc is very smooth, so it’s not going to mar your case or phone when you spin it to a different angle. Within the center of that central disc is a ring 2″ in diameter that is .1875″ wide. It can hinge open up to 180º.

In the center of all this is a patterned metal disc that is held in place by that same magnetic pull. The pattern is silk-screened, not a sticker or Kevlar, even though one of the patterns matches one of their Kevlar cases. That center disc can be unattached easily by pressing on any edge and grabbing the opposite side with a finger. Between the disc is a web of fabric/leather that you can fit a finger or two into, and the disc holds it flat against the phone. This is very secure for my iPhone 16 Pro Max, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max I also tested it on. The disc and webbing arrangement swivel within the whole clip, so you don’t have to swivel the entire attachment around. This is easy, because usually with  ring-type holder, you have to swivel with the MagSafe connection. By swiveling within itself, the MagClap prevents the dual issues of dealing with MagSafe connections, and the possibility that you’ll scratch your case or the back of the phone. The swivel is smooth and tight, so it doesn’t appear to be getting looser over time.

Around this central disc, the ring mentioned earlier can hinge to be a stand. The hinge is easy to move but stays very nicely in place, so if you’re on a call or watching a video and want to use your hands for other things, you can. It’s also easy to hang the phone up with this ring. However, it’s not particularly comfortable to hold for long periods because the edges are shaped to fit within the closed area. Hence the disc loop.

Performance

I was very pleased with the performance of the Benks MagClap Phone Grip & Stand. It never once released when I didn’t force it loose by pulling it across the back of the case to sheer it off, and getting my finger into the holding loop was very easy. (Not as easy as a straight ring or a pop-up knob, but not a huge difference.) Using it as a stand while watching videos was the star of the show, though. Other holders can be used as stands, but this one is the most sturdy and stable of all the types I have tested.

Final thoughts

When this type of thing first appeared on the market, I was a bit amused, thinking “Who would ever need/use such a thing?” Then I used one for a few minutes, and the relief in the cramp of my pinkie not having to hold up the phone’s weight during use made me a believer. The MagClap Phone Grip & Stand, out of the three styles I have used, is my favorite as a stand, but the disc/loop holder is still a little awkward for me to deploy one-handed. It will still be in my rotation as I continue to hone my ultimate phone case/holder, so who knows what the outcome will be? At $20, though, it’s a pretty cheap option in this niche.

What I like about the Benks MagClap Phone Grip & Stand

  • Strong magnet
  • Variety of styles/colors
  • The stand is stable and versatile
  • Pop-out finger loop swivels internally

What I’d change

  • Can’t really think of anything
