NEWS – Would you like to become a writer on the Gadgeteer team and write about interesting gadgets and cool gear? I currently have 2-3 volunteer positions that I need to fill. Interested? Read below for details on how to apply.
Work expectations:
New team members will start out writing news posts for 2 weeks. News posts are short articles that consist of 1-2 images and a short paragraph with a minimum of 200 words. Check out our past news posts to see examples of the type of writing and topics we cover.
After the trial period, if you are picked to become a permanent member of the Gadgeteer team, you’ll be able to start doing product reviews. Team members who also write news posts on a regular basis will get preferred access to new review sample offers. I like to reward people who go over and beyond.
Compensation:
Let me make it clear upfront that these are non-paying positions. Your “pay” will be the product samples that you’ll be able to keep once you’ve written a review.
I’m not looking for professional freelance writers or guest posters to write fluff pieces just for SEO purposes. I’m looking for everyday gadget nerds like me and the rest of the Gadgeteer team, who just love this stuff and aren’t in it for the $’s.
Requirements:
1. You must have a firm grasp of the English language. You need to write with good grammar, and know the difference between “its” and “it’s” and “your” and “you’re”. I don’t have time to completely re-write posts, so writing skills will weigh heavily on my decision for these positions.
2. You must have above average photography skills and have the ability to take sharp, well-lighted close-ups of the products being reviewed. Dim, blurry images just won’t cut it.
3. You must be able to stick to deadlines. Reviews must be submitted within 30 days after you receive the product sample. If you can’t stick to a hard deadline, then please don’t apply.
4. Age and gender do not matter, but you do need to be located in the US because the PR agencies that I work with generally will not ship review samples outside the country due to shipping hassles and expenses. Sorry!
How to apply:
Send an email to
ju***@th***********.com
telling me a little about yourself, including your age, where you live, what you currently do for a living, what types of products that interest you the most, and why you think you would be a good fit for The Gadgeteer.
I’ll use the info in your email to decide who I will ask to audition for a spot on the team by writing a sample review which will show me your writing and photography skills. I will then choose the best candidates to go through a short trial period posting news. After that trial period ends, I’ll decide who will become permanent team members. I’m excited to hear from you! If you have any questions before sending me your bio email, please post them in the comments.
Update 1/9/21
I’m no longer accepting emails/applications for new writers.

Hi Julie
This sounds like an amazing opportunity and while I see the prerequisite of being a US resident I would love to throw my hat in the ring. I’m based out of Canada and wonder if that will be a workable solution.
Hi Julie,
I’ve been following the Gadgeteer for more years than I can remember now, and every time you put out a call for more testers/team members, I get excited – but then comes the dreaded “US only” tag line.
“Ahh well” I sigh to myself – perhaps the next time!
I fully understand the reason why – I live in hope that someday there will be an urgent need for a reviewer based in rural Ireland!
Keep up the excellent work, and a happy 2021
I’m sorry guys. If it was up to me, I’d want writers from around the globe, but it’s the PR companies that send the review samples and 9 times out of 10 they don’t ship outside the US.
What an amazing opportunity for someone to not only test out new items they may never have tried otherwise. Im a 53 year old grandma of 12 lil girls (20yrs \6yrs& 1 crazy lil boy age3) with 5 living next door to me. I hope you find great people to help you out. Honestly i was just writing to say THANK YOU for Knowing that there is a difference between its & it’s or two, to & two. These things seem to no longer be important to people. But i have stopped reading articles because its so damn annoying.
Thank you again and i cant wait to read more.
