I knew this was going to be an odd Kickstarter project the moment I saw the company name – CHERRY on the bag. I expected the product to have a cherry logo or at least be Red in color. It has neither… What is it? CHERRY on the bag is a collection of Black full-grain calfskin leather bags, cases and wallets. The bags look nice enough, but the feature that is supposed to make you want to pledge for this crowdfunded project is their built in NFC chip. NFC stands for near field communication. Many of the latest and greatest Android smartphones have this capability built in. The idea is that you wave your phone over the bag and it can then tell you if it’s authentic or if it’s been stolen. I guess this is the 21st century’s version of a serial number that you’d find on a luxury product. It just leaves me scratching my head. I’d never pay extra for this feature… I could care less. What about you? Do you think NFC authentication is awesome? It doesn’t seem like many people are excited about it as their project has 13 days left and has only earned $6041 of their $70,000 goal. Pledges range from $50 for an NFC enabled leather keychain up to $3000 for a Weekender bag and 2 nights in Paris (you get to pay for transportation).

Their goal is $70,000. not $700,000.
@aphoid thanks for catching my typo.
This concept would only make sense to be introduced by an already established bag maker (since they are charging expensive boutique pricing for an unknown brand). For example if PRADA came out with this on their line of products.
For the rest of us… i’d be happier if they installed a solar charging panel on there 😉
