REVIEW – I’ve reviewed several smart rings over the years, but today I’m going to share my experience testing a smart ring with a feature I’ve wanted since reviewing my first smart ring. Let’s take a look at the Lumeon smart ring.

What is it?

The Lumeom smart ring is a fitness tracker in the form factor of a ring that you wear on your finger, tracking steps, heart rate, SpO₂, battery level, and displaying the time.

Design and features

The Lumeom smart ring is available in silver (shown here), black, and gold versions, in sizes 8 – 13. Their website shows a bronze/copper colored version, but I don’t see a way to order it.

The Lumeom ring looks like other smart rings when you look on the inside and can see the circuitry and the circular battery contact.

But when you look closer at the outside of the ring, you notice a wide black band and a “button” on the side.

The black band is an LED display, and the button is a touch button that allows you to cycle through time, steps, heart rate, oxygen level, sleep duration, and battery level. The manual says that the ring will display TEL when a call comes in and that you can press the button on the ring to answer the call. This feature does not appear to be available when the ring is paired with my iPhone. It’s possible that it’s only available on Android.

The ring will last approximately 3 days on a single charge. When the time comes, there are two ways to charge the Lumeom smart ring. The first way is the handy dandy charging case that has its own built-in battery.

I like the charging case because it’s a self-contained charger. You can take it with you when you go on a trip, and you won’t need to bring along a separate cable, AC adapter, or another device to plug it into.

There’s also a proprietary USB cable that is included with the ring that attaches to the inside of the ring. You’ll have use a USB AC adapter or a laptop with this cable.

Lumeom JRing app

Where many smart rings try to cram a billion features into their rings and their apps, the Lumeon smart ring app is very basic in a mostly good way.

The main screen give you a quick overview of your activity for the day (in steps), how long you slept the previous night, heart rate data, and blood oxygen data.

Each block can be tapped to go deeper into that stat. I do wish that I could tap the sleep segments to see what time I was awake the previous night. But that’s not an option.

Regarding sleep tracking, I really pay much attention to that stat. I figure if I wake up feeling good, I slept well and if I wake up feeling like I was run over by a truck, I didn’t. However, I did compare the sleep data from the Lumeom ring to the sleep data from my Ultra Human ring. I feel like the Lumeom does a better job of reporting how long I slept compared to the Ultra Human, which always reports much longer sleep times. Here are the hours from three consecutive nights.

Night Lumeom Smart Ring Ultra Human Smart Ring
1 8 hours 9 hours 25 minutes
2 8 hours 15 minutes 10 hours 5 minutes
3 9 hours 10 hours 30 minutes

Now, let’s compare the step counts recorded by the Lumeon ring, the Ultra Human ring, and my Apple Watch.

Day Ultra Human Apple Watch Lumeom
1 6017 6700 5631
2 2067 2212 941
3 4094 4331 5077

As you can see, the numbers from the three devices are all different. I should also mention that I wore the two rings on the same hand (my right, non-dominant hand) and the Apple Watch was on my left wrist, which is my dominant hand. I really don’t know which fitness tracker of the three is the most accurate. I don’t get fixated on needing to know the exact number of steps. I just want to get close and go on trends more than exact counts per day.

When I compared the on-demand heart rate and blood oxygen level measurements between my Apple Watch and the Lumeom ring, the readings were spot on, or one beat or percentage point difference every time I tested.

The Sports tab uses your phone’s GPS to track your walking, running, and other routes along with speed, duration, steps, heart rate, etc. I didn’t test this because it’s been too hot to walk outside. I do all my walking on a treadmill 🙂

But wait, there’s more…

The Lumeon smart ring’s touch button can also be used as a remote shutter button, but you have to use the camera inside the Lumeon app when you want to use this feature. There’s also a feature that is supposed to let you skip video by shaking your finger (with the ring on it). I was never able to get this feature to work with my iPhone and YouTube.

Final thoughts

For a little over $100, this is a decent smart fitness tracking ring. It tracks your steps, heart rate, blood oxygen level, and sleep while allowing you to see those stats on the ring’s built-in display. I’ve wanted this feature since my first smart ring. Now that it’s here, I think it could be even better if there were an option to turn off the light at night or adjust the brightness. One time, I turned over and my bed buddy asked what the heck the lights were because she thought it was a UFO 😉 So, it’s a fun feature, but in a perfect world, it would be more customizable and even allow for an always-on-time display.

What I like about Lumeom smart ring

  • Built-in display shows time and stats
  • Easy app interface

What needs to be improved?

  • It would be great to have the ability to turn off the display at night or change the brightness level
  • It’s too easy to accidentally press the touch button on the side of the ring
