REVIEW – Is it just me, or does Titaner have a new EDC gadget every other day? Ok, that’s an exaggeration – slightly. But seriously, Titaner is always introducing cool new gear for everyday carry fans and today I get the pleasure of showing you the Mix 3.0 ruler.

What is it?

The Titaner Mix 3.0 is a small pocket sized ruler made of titanium.

Design and features

titaner mix3 5

The Mix 3.0 ruler is made of a combination of stonewashed Gr5 titanium for the main structure and a brass insert in the back, which I’ll show you in just a second. This ruler has a quality look and heft.

The ruler features both metric 0-12 centimeters (closed) and imperial 0 – 5 inches (closed) laser-engraved scales.

One end has a large hole for an optional lanyard, and there’s a slot for adding a tritium vial (not included).

As mentioned, the back of the Mix 3.0 has a brass insert for the slide rule feature. I didn’t even know what people used a slide rule for until I received this ruler. I had to Google it. If you don’t know either, here’s the definition:

A slide rule is a mechanical analog computing device that was used before electronic calculators to perform mathematical calculations, particularly multiplication, division, and finding square roots. It consists of logarithmic scales, some on a movable slide and some on a fixed base, that are aligned to perform calculations.

Now we both know used for! I really wish Titaner included a short instruction sheet for using that feature, as well as the caliper and continuous ruler features.

I did find a quick slide rule explanation on their site. But from what I’m seeing, you can only do very basic calculations that everyone should be able to do in their head. I’m probably missing something here… Mathgeeks can feel free to make fun of me in the comments.

Yes, you can use the Titaner Mix 3.0 as a ruler and as a pair of calipers. The end of the ruler is held in place with a magnet (which gives it a fun fidget feel). The ruler extends to provide a full-length measurement device for 23.5 cm / 9.25 in.

But if you look at the screw in the center channel, it has a line that will line up with a measurement if you want to use the Mix 3.0 as a pair of calipers.

I’ve actually used calipers before in my past life as an electronic components CAD person. The way it works is that you place the object in the measurement jaws. Then the line on the screw will give you the measurement in both metric and inches. This works pretty well, but the jaws are very short compared to a traditional pair of calipers. And there’s only a pair of outside jaws and not inside jaws. Inside jaws are used to measure the inside dimension of an object, like the diameter of a bottle opening. The calipers are a “fun” feature, but really, not all that useful in my opinion.

The extended ruler can be used for continuous measurements, as demonstrated in the video above. Again, this video shows how to do it, but I wouldn’t mind a written explanation for people who are a little math-challenged. Basically, you just add up the lengths. But that assumes that you’ll remember them as you go along 😉 I think a traditional tape measure is much simpler for long measurements.

Something that is useful is the built-in pen that stores in the center sliding section of the ruler. This little D1-sized pen means that you’ll always have something to record your measurements or make lines.

Final thoughts

Titaner makes unique and well made EDC items. Some of these items are just unique and interesting, without being truly useful, and some iterms unique and actually useful. I think the Mix 3.0 ruler lives up to its name because it’s a mix of both. It is a great little desk ruler for drawing straight lines. It can also measure short and long objects using the continuous measurement feature. But the slide rule and caliper features seem to be a novelty, at least in my opinion. Maybe I’m missing something though. The price makes this gadget beyond an impulse buy, so let me know what you think. Is this something you’d add to your EDC? Share in the comments below.
