REVIEW – I’ve reviewed a lot of earphones and earbuds (still can’t tell the difference), but I’ve only recently discovered earbuds that don’t go in the ear. This newer open-ear approach lets the earbud sit just outside the ear. It’s like a cross between a true earphone and an older Walkman-type foam headphone, like the classic Koss PortaPro. Recently, my review of the Oladance OWS Pro Earphones opened my eyes—and ears— to a new way of using earbuds. Now, there is a similar, but different earbud that’s tiny, yet still sounds good. Can the Edifier Comfo C Open-ear True Wireless Earbuds compete with other open-ear (or in-ear) earphones? Let’s check it out.

What is it?

The Edifier Comfo C Open-ear True Wireless Earbuds are a C-shaped clip-style earbud that wraps around the helix (outer) part of the ear. It kinda looks like jewelry when worn. The speaker rests on the inside part while the mics sit outside.

The Comfo shell consists of two parts (speaker and mics/battery) connected by a bendable center that can be flexed for fitting. The center part holds a pressure-sensitive area for tapping. The weight of each earbud is extremely light.

The speaker in the Comfo C is a 12mm titanium-coated dynamic driver. It produces audio with minimal sound leakage (meaning others cannot hear what you hear). Phone calls use an AI algorithm for clearer calls (more on that later). Edifier includes what they call “Multipoint Connection” which is the ability to transition between devices while wearing the earbuds.

When either of the Comfo earbuds is removed, music/media is automatically paused. Note that it media can be resumed with the remaining single earbud by pressing “play”.

The Edifier Comfo C earbuds are water and dust-proof rated at IP56, meaning they can safely be worn in rain or dusty environments. However, they cannot be submerged.

Six colors are offered: Black, Starlight, Green, Pink, Gray, or Ivory. Starlight (what I’m reviewing) is a shiny pearlescent color.

Design and features

The first time I saw earbuds like the Comfo C, it reminded me of the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds. While similar, the Edifier version relies on a flexible center bridge (stem), rather than the Bose’s more complicated solution. The Comfo C is intuitive and requires no instructions. To make it even easier, Edifier designed the Comfo C earbuds to be left/right agnostic. For example, place either bud in the right ear and it becomes the right earbud. Same for the left. Ingenious!

The comfort level of the Comfo C is wonderful. When worn, the clip part holds them in place without being tight. After wearing them for a few minutes, they can easily be forgotten. That’s a good thing. Add 7 hours of battery life to that and you get an almost perfect earbud. Almost, but not quite.

Despite their comfort, the Comfo C earbuds have never felt secure on/in my ears. They always feel like they are going to fall off and I wouldn’t notice. However, they have never fallen off my ears, so it’s more a feeling than reality. I just need to be more trusting when wearing them.

Edifier Comfo C 3

The much less-than-perfect part of the Comfo C earbuds is bass or lack of it. This is not Edifier’s fault. No on-ear earbud is going to provide similar bass to what an in-ear earphone or closed-back headphone can offer. It’s physics. If I press the Comfo C’s into my ear, closer to my ear opening, the bass becomes much more prominent and richer sounding. But they are not designed to do that. Edifier makes other earphones designed to go into the ear—and those have spot-on bass.

The good news is that the Edifier Comfo C earbuds are great at listening to podcasts, audiobooks, YouTube videos, or any non-music sources that rely on spoken or environmental sound. I listen to podcasts (a bit too much) and vocal clarity is great. Many times, regular earphones have too much bass to hear a human voice clearly. Not these!

That doesn’t mean music can’t be enjoyed with the Comfo C earbuds. It just requires an EQ setting to either lower the treble or increase the bass to compensate. Note that even with bass-friendly EQ settings, bass will remain a weak point.

Edifier Comfo C 4

The Comfo C earbuds can connect to the newer Edifier Connex app, one of the better corporate audio apps that connect with Edifier products. This app has a lot of settings, from tapping prompts, basic EQ settings, an online manual, and even resetting to name just a few. There’s even a process to vibrate moisture out of the earbud after those sweaty workouts! In the Connex app, Edifier has a gaming mode for the Comfo C earbuds, reducing lag and improving syncing between video and audio.  I don’t game, so I will take Edifier’s word for it.

Using the Comfo C for phone calls was surprisingly good. The mic is located away from the speaker’s mouth, so any audible calls were a pleasant surprise. Granted, calls were not at the Apple AirPods Pro level, but the people I spoke with understood me with no clarity issues.

Tapping prompts can be set using the Connex app. I decided to stick with Edifier’s presets, as they made the most sense. Double-tapping on the center bridge can pause/play media. Tapping must be done with a bit of force for the Comfo to register the touch, however sensitivity can be adjusted. A frustrating issue I have with the touch setting is that many times I would accidentally pause content when adjusting the earbuds which required me to touch the center bridge.

Another issue I have is Edifier’s Multipoint Connection. Yes, it allows connections between devices, but one source must be stopped before another can be started. Other earphones I’ve reviewed can switch automatically without this extra step.

Final thoughts

The Edifier Comfo C Open-ear True Wireless Earbuds are a good choice for clip-style earbuds. They are extremely light, super comfortable, and reasonably priced. If you don’t place a premium on bass, that could be the perfect audio trifecta.
