If you spend a lot of time using your laptop in the family room because you like to surf while watching TV or because you don’t have a dedicated office space, a convertible coffee table could be a back-saver. I’ve seen these tables in lots of styles and price points at furniture stores, and now even Hammacher Schlemmer is offering one. This table is a very simple style in a walnut finish. When closed, it’s 20″ H x 38″ W x 24″D and serves as a normal coffee table. You can open it to 30.5″ tall and use it as a desk; the top lifts up and toward you for comfortable access and the base is weighted to prevent tipping. There’s even some storage space under the top for remotes, or maybe even your laptop. The convertible coffee table from Hammacher Schlemmer is $199.95, but you can probably shop around and find one to match the style of your furniture, if you prefer.

I’ve had a convertible coffee table since 2005. Bought mine at the now defunct Levitz furniture, but it is a nice thing to have. People are “amazed” that my table becomes a desk when I want to use it. Its great conversation!
HA HA! I had this table like 10 years ago and LOVED it. It was so solid and as Renee said the “magic” of lifting it impressed everyone who saw it.
Be sure your couch isn’t too low since the height isn’t adjustable, but if it matches up it’s awesome for using your laptop on the couch.
(BTW, super not baby safe since the top closes rather firmly and doesn’t care if a finger or head is in the way.) 🙂
Back when I first saw these they were for eating in front of your TV because whoever heard of laptops in a persons home in front of a TV?
Time marches on…
