I’ve seen some incredibly useful and thought provoking creations and I’ve seen a few that had good intent but needed more time on the drawing board. The Pivot X Wrench, today’s review, just looks really cool and has some really intriguing features that I wanted to see in action. Read on to see how it held up!

What is it?

The Pivot X Wrench is an every day carry multitool with a bunch of unique additions.

Design and features

There are a bunch of different functions included in the design of this multitool. It includes an adjustable wrench that also can be used as calipers.

Pivot X Wrench 2

I had to break out some actual calipers to check out the calibration and accuracy. The calipers on the wrench only measure metric.

Pivot X Wrench 10

The screwdriver on this tool is kind of different. The tool includes two bits, Phillips and flathead, which insert into a slot on the wrench. I’m not a huge fan of this design, because while you can use it as a screwdriver, you can’t get very deep into a hard to reach area. Also, if you push too hard, it pushes the bit out of the back of the slot on the wrench. Since the bits are held on the tool with a couple of magnets, they also pop off fairly easily if you drop it or knock it very hard. I had to add a small rubber band to ensure that the bits stayed on.

Pivot X Wrench 12

Included glass-breaker is a nice addition to an EDC tool. It’s a bit poky carrying around in a pocket, but I liked having it there.

Pivot X Wrench 3

The included ruler is also in metric and measures up to 4 centimeters. Pay attention to the tick marks on the bar, as I think the digital calibration on this is off.

Pivot X Wrench 11

Belt/pocket clip. Out of the box, the clip is way too loose and is going to fall off pretty easily. Fairly easy to tighten up if you have the right tools, but again, not great out of the box.

Performance

The pry bar on the Pivot X is one of the most interesting additions on this tool. I had to test it and see how it held up to actual use. The head on the pry bar has a small switch to change it to a 90 degree angle.

Pivot X Wrench 4

90 degree switch.

Pivot X Wrench 5

I put three different nails into a 2×4 board. I was pretty disappointed by the nail pulling performance. Not too surprised, given that the pry bar is only 4 inches long, so it doesn’t give much leverage.

Pivot X Wrench 8

This also exposed a pretty serious flaw with the nail puller in that the cutout for the nail isn’t angled correctly to really get under a nail. It struggled with all three nails and I wasn’t able to pull any of them out.

Pivot X Wrench 6

Example of the nail puller not working for a nail. You can also see the other nail head that got really beat up in my attempts to pull it out.

Pivot X Wrench 9

I was able to get under a large galvanized nail, but I wasn’t able to pull it out.

Final thoughts

I think that this multi-tool looks cool, but struggles on applied functionality. It’s actually a pretty fun fidget to play with when I’m sitting at my desk. Carrying it around in my pocket, the wrench would work its way open and I’d have to dial it back the next time I pulled it out. The pry bar did not work for nails, but is fine for small things besides that. I didn’t like the screwdriver design just because I don’t think it’s a very functional design. It looks cool, but I don’t think that I would recommend it, at least for how I would use it.

What I like about the Pivot X Wrench

  • Looks cool
  • Having a portable caliper is a nice addition
  • A glass breaker can be invaluable in a pinch

What needs to be improved?

  • Fix the nail puller on the pry bar
  • Include a clasp or sheath to keep the bits from falling out
  • Tighten up the belt/pocket clip
  • Include the inches measurement on the flip side of the caliper and ruler
