That’s how monitoring headphones really get worn. Almost nothing is built for it. beyerdynamic’s new DT 275 PRO is, and that’s the part worth talking about. It’s out now in North America at $149.99.
The posture nobody builds for
Most headphones assume you want both ears covered. The cable comes out of the left cup. The clamp is set for a sealed pair. None of it works when you only want half of it on your head.
Anyone who’s monitored a live signal knows the problem. You need the cue in one ear and the room in the other. You also need to switch which ear does which job as you move around. A cable fixed to one side makes that a fight.
The DT 275 PRO locks its cable into either earcup. beyerdynamic built it for left or right side monitoring on purpose. It looks like a footnote on a spec sheet. On a shoot, it changes how the whole headphone feels to use.
Why 22 dB on an on-ear is the odd part
beyerdynamic lists 22 dBA of passive noise blocking. On a big sealed over-ear, that would be a normal number. On an on-ear, it’s the most interesting claim in the announcement. On-ears sit against the ear instead of around it, so they usually let the room straight in.
That number is what lets the half-on setup work on a loud stage. If the cup still on your head can’t hold back the crowd, side monitoring stops working after soundcheck. The figure comes from beyerdynamic, not from independent testing. Treat it as a claim until somebody puts it on a measurement rig.
What the hardware does with that idea
The earcups swivel. They have to, if one of them is going to sit flat behind your ear for hours without fighting the headband.
It weighs 195g without a cable. That’s under the 200g mark where an on-ear stops feeling clamped to your head. It matters more here than on a headphone you wear sitting down.
beyerdynamic lists a 5 Hz to 24,000 Hz frequency response and 45 ohm impedance. The impedance is the useful number of the two. At 45 ohms it runs clean off a camera, a field recorder, or a mixer headphone jack, with no amp in the bag. Wired audio keeps picking up buyers, as Panasonic’s USB-C ErgoFit refresh showed earlier this year.
In the box you get a 1.5 m cable in coiled and straight form, a 6.35 mm adapter, a drawstring bag, and a quick start guide. beyerdynamic lists that cable as one item. So it isn’t clear yet whether you get two cables or one.
The parts you can replace instead of the headphone
The earpads, the headband padding, and the cable can all be replaced. The cable twists into a locking connector instead of just pushing in. Cables are what kill working headphones, usually at the strain relief, usually in the middle of a job. beyerdynamic says the DJ 300 PRO X cable fits too, so the spare is already in a lot of DJ bags.
At $149.99 that’s the difference between something you throw away and something you keep. beyerdynamic hasn’t given spare part prices yet. How good the deal is depends on numbers nobody has.
Who should skip this
If you want this for a commute or a flight, buy something else. That 22 dBA is built for a room full of people, not a cabin full of engine noise. For that you want active cancellation and wireless. Plenty of those go on sale for less than this costs.
If you mix seriously rather than cue and check, this isn’t your headphone either. An on-ear at this price is for making quick calls, not for final mixing. beyerdynamic isn’t pretending otherwise.
