REVIEW – As an admitted crazy cat lady, keeping my cat happy and giving her things that she, as a senior kitty can use, is important. Every cat tree I have is tiered so she can climb it, and there are three sets of stairs throughout the house for her. The Mau Reiya cat tree allowed me to have an elegant piece of cat furniture with tiered steps that Abbie needs, along with being easy to clean for when she has her less than graceful moments.

Design and features

As mentioned prior, my senior kitty, Abbie, is just a little spoiled. I’ve tried my hardest to find cat furniture that isn’t just carpet glued to particle board, but that’s actually quite difficult without spending a little extra money.

Assembling the Mau Reiya cat tree was not difficult as one person, though it would have been easier with two. It comes with the base, two solid wood platforms with brackets, three solid wood pillars, and two wicker baskets with removable cushions. The instructions were clear and it took less than 20 minutes to assemble using the included hex wrench.

Once assembled, Abbie was curious, but she avoided it completely for over a week until I put it next to her box perch. With that, she curiously climbed up top from the perch. I left it like that for a few days, then moved it away from the perch. Since then, she’s used it equally along with the other cat furniture around the room.

Abbie prefers the top tier of the Mau Reiya cat tree, as it allows her to look out the window and down the hallway. I initially noticed how big the basket beds were, but once Abbie, who is an average sized, 11 pound cat, laid in it, I realized how roomy they truly were. She could sprawl out or curl up to her heart’s content.

The bottom basket bed was used for when Abbie was awake and waiting for something, as she could easily just jump down and run up to ‘ask’ what she needed. (Spoiler: It’s always food or treats.) It’s high enough that she has that perch she can sit on, but low enough that she, as an older kitty, can jump down from as well.

Having machine washable cushions is a great perk, as cleaning will be easier when hairballs inevitably arise. The solid wood will also make it easy to wipe down, while the only difficult part to clean will be the baskets, which can be unscrewed and rinsed off if need be.

Every person who has seen the Mau Reiya cat tree has been impressed with the look. What impressed my parents most is how sturdy it is, as they have a near 20 pound cat that would have no issue running up to the top without knocking it over. While the solid wood makes it hefty, it also makes it sturdy.

There is a scratching mat attached to the longest pole of the cat tree, but Abbie refuses to use it. From the look, it seems like it would be just as nice to scratch as the sisal rope she normally uses, but until she realizes it, the post stays unused. The scratching post/mat is able to be replaced if your cat goes through scratching posts quickly, which should keep that elegant, pricey piece of cat furniture looking as good as new.

Final thoughts

Overall, while it took over a week for Abbie to get the courage to climb it, it ended up being a great piece of furniture for her to relax and watch down the hallway, out the window, or just sleep on. The beds are more than big enough for her, and the tiered steps are just at the level that at 14 years old, she can still climb them gracefully. If you have the extra money to spend on a high quality, elegant piece of furniture for your cat, the Mau Reiya is a solid build that will support cats of all sizes.
