REVIEW – I’m no stranger to Govee and have several of their products actively serving in my home – outdoor light strips on the front of my house, in the bathroom, and bedroom, and a light curtain in the front window. All have been reliable and great fun. I love the ability to change the color, brightness, and patterns with a few voice commands or button clicks, so I was looking forward to adding their Outdoor UpDown Wall Lights to the lighting team!

Design and features
I’ve been helping with replacing fluorescent lights in our church with LEDs. They’re efficient and work well, but when I asked one of the team members if she liked them, she commented, “Yeah, they are super bright and I like them, but at some point I want to put in some colorful lighting like cool people.” Installing Govee’s Outdoor Up/Down Sconce Wall Lights definitely makes me feel like “cool people.”
A pair arrived in Govee’s polished packaging. They are surprisingly heavy.
The housings are made like a tank and feel remarkably sturdy.
The top and bottom have lenses, reflectors, and a diffuser.
Both sides have frosted lenses.
The base affixes to the light body with multiple screws. The hot and neutral electrical wires are secured with a strain relief and waterproofed to protect the internal circuitry.
Mounting plates make installation easy. After being secured to the wall or electrical box, hooks hold the weight of the light. It’s a small detail, but it is deeply appreciated! If you’ve ever had to let a light dangle while you climb down the ladder to find that darn screw you just dropped, you’ll know what I mean.
In my case, I replaced my porch light, so there was no need to run new wire. Please be very careful when working with electricity. Turn off that power, people! If you’re not confident with what you’re doing, please hire a professional. Given the opportunity, electricity will kill you, and, at minimum, a zap will hurt like the dickens.
After making the electrical connections and attaching the mounting plate to the wall, the wall Light fastens with screws on each side.
With the toggle of a circuit breaker and flip of a switch, the Govee Wall Light started with a beautiful display. I couldn’t wait until it gets dark!
While waiting for dark, I added the Wall Light to the Govee app. There were no surprises. An update installs before using the light.
The main page provides quick access to power, brightness, white color temperature, color, and multiple buttons for scene control.
Govee provides pages of multicolor light scenes. These are crazy fun!
If the preprogrammed scenes don’t float your boat, you can share scenes created by other Govee artists or create your own. Delightful!
I usually leave my Govee lights on as a solid color, so I don’t freak my neighbors out too much.
Occasionally, some color adds a dash of pizzazz.
Another excellent feature is Govee’s “Scenic DreamView” that joins capable devices together for a synchronized light show. If you’re into house-wide holiday displays, this will make your day – Christmas, New Year’s, Birth, Valentine’s, and more! Here are a few examples of what the Govee lights can do.
They even synchronize with music! So cool!
The Govee Up/Down Wall Lights are dazzling!
Govee also supports multiple timers and schedules. My personal favorite uses location data to determine sunrise and sunset times. I like to turn my lights on at sunset. Lovely!
After sunset, I had a blast playing with the Wall Light and Outdoor Light Strip! I’ll only use the flashiest modes on special occasions, as I don’t want to annoy my neighbors. Please note: The light strip shown is not included with the Wall Lights. So… Much… Fun…!
Final thoughts
Govee knocked one out of the park with the Outdoor UpDown Wall lights. They are very bright, and the color patterns they can display are super slick. Quality is top-notch, installation was easy, and the app is well-designed. An excellent product, Govee! Now I want to replace my recessed porch lights! Thanks for making me feel like “cool people!”
