REVIEW – I have a real weakness when it comes to journals and covers for journals. Last year, I had the opportunity to review two covers from LOCHBY and now, they’ve sent me the newest cover, the LOCHBY Mini Field Journal. While I might not take it out in a field, let’s see if it’s designed for every day use.
What is it?
The LOCHBY Mini Field Journal is a canvas journal cover that is designed to hold up to 4 pocket notebooks along with your favorite pen and other small items.

Design and features
The LOCHBY Mini Field Journal is available in three colors: Charcoal, Navy, and the Brown version that you see here.
The cover is made of water-resistant waxed canvas with contrasting sewn binding around the edges, which gives it a rugged style. The front top corner has a LOCHBY logo tag.
The back of the cover has an open-topped pocket that you can use for flat items like papers or maybe a ruler. The pocket isn’t stretchy, so you won’t want to slide something small to the bottom of the pocket because you’ll have a hard time retrieving it.
One of the unique features of the LOCHBY Mini Field Journal is the strap on the spine.
The spine of the cover is flat, like a book. The covers and spine are rigid which gives it a rugged, protective feel.
Another great feature of the LOCHBY Mini Field Journal is the way they designed the closure. It has a metal hook that inserts into a loop sewn into the front cover. A strap allows for the cover to be tightly cinched closed.
Now, let’s take a look at the inside of the cover. The brown version of the Mini Field Journal has a bright gold interior that reminds me of WaterField Design bags. I love it. It’s bright and happy.
On the left side, there are four pockets and on the right side, there’s one large pocket. In the center, you can see that there are two bookmark ribbons and four elastic bands.
The LOCHBY Mini Field Journal has taken inspiration from the Travelers Notebook, which also uses elastic bands to hold a variety of inserts (notebooks).
The LOCHBY can hold up to four notebooks.
They include one of their own 72 page dot grid notebooks, which are quite nice. They are made of 68 gsm Tomoe River paper. If you’re not familiar with Tomoe River paper, it’s fantastic for people who like to write with fountain pens because it won’t bleed through or feather. The paper is also acid-free, so your writings and drawings will be preserved.
Last but not least, the LOCHBY Mini Field Journal has a built-in elastic pen loop. My favorite pen right now is the Uniball One .38 gel pen. It fits perfectly in this loop.
Final thoughts
I can easily say that the LOCHBY Mini Field Journal is my favorite LOCHBY cover that I’ve reviewed so far. It looks great, is very well made, and the little touches make it fun to use, like the handle and the metal clasp. If you enjoy writing in pocket notebooks and want to carry more than one, this cover is perfect for that. I highly recommend it and anything from LOCHBY.
