NEWS – I have friends and family members who are struggling with macular degeneration. It’s a condition that strikes those who are 50 or over and affects your central vision – you can’t see things directly in front of you. There’s no cure. You can only strive to slow its progress. I didn’t realize how much I rely on my vision to accomplish everyday tasks until I started helping those struggling with this. That’s when I discovered the Eschenback Visolux Digital XL FHD at a low-vision specialist’s office while helping my family member who is dealing with macular degeneration. One of the employees showed it to us and showed us what it can do.
It can magnify newsprint-sized text (2x – 22x) on its 12″ non-reflective 1920 x 1080-resolution touchscreen LCD (16:9 widescreen format). It has adjustable LEDs (three brightness levels) and a lithium-ion battery that will last for 2.5 hours and recharge in 4.5 hours.
You can use buttons (Contrast, Camera, Power, Decrease magnification, Increase magnification) or the touchscreen display to control the device. The employee demonstrating the Visolux Digital XL also showed us the different color contrast options. I like the white letters on a black background. The Dynamic Line Scrolling (DLS) feature allows the user to scroll magnified text horizontally and vertically without moving the device. You can even capture and store images on the removable 8GB SD card (provided with the device). It also has HDMI and USB ports to attach to a computer or TV.
The Eschenbach Visolux Digital XL FHD device is available on Amazon and is the largest device they carry with the largest cost – $1895. But they do have smaller devices:
the Eschenbach Visolux Digital HD (7″ screen) for $1195 and…
the Eschenbach Mobilux Digital Touch HD (4.3″ screen) for $764.50.

I have old geezer eye problems and have used magnifiers for years. I have a box with about 30 or so that I’ve bought and found were ca⇄rp. However, Eschenbach products are truly excellent. I have two Eschenbach hand held aspheric magnifiers (NOT cheap!) that are amazingly clear.
I’ve considered these Visolux models and will probably have to get one in the future. The only drawback is that they slow down reading quite a bit.
LeoB – when the employee showed us the Eschenbach products I too was impressed, they do look amazingly clear, but they are incredibly expensive – so I agree with you on all fronts!
