REVIEW – I was spoiled as a kid, as I had an automatic can opener, and while I’ve tried them on and off after leaving home, I just haven’t found one I’ve wanted to keep around. The Orbit One rechargeable professional strength can opener by Kitchen Mama is an automatic can opener that is small in size with no plugs, so I thought it would be worthwhile to give it a shot. Anything is better than a manual can opener, right?

Design and features
The first thing I had to do was completely charge up the Orbit One can opener, so using the included USB-C cable, I gave it a couple of hours and let it charge up fully. When charging, there is a light that stays a solid red. When it is complete, the red light turns off. After a month of use, it took a few hours to charge the Orbit One up fully. The battery did not go out once in that time frame.
Using the included blade screwdriver, I made sure that the blade was tightened. It was really convenient to have everything within the case, just ‘in case’ it was needed. While I never had to change out the blades, having it right there will make it much less likely for me to lose anything.
The case itself is made of hard plastic, with areas for each accessory while the Orbit One can opener rests on top. Everything, including the charging cable, fit easily within. It doesn’t come with any latch to keep closed, but it seemed to stay shut without issue when tossed into its spot in the kitchen drawer.
Next, I meal planned so I could use the Orbit One as much as possible, which happened to be chicken enchilada soup. I picked up some cans of fruit as well. Since it didn’t matter what size or shape the can was, I first used the Orbit One to open up a tiny can of green chile peppers. I was quite impressed as it had no issue cutting through. I just sat it on where I thought it should go, pressed the big button on the top, and it got itself into position and started cutting.
Once it was complete, I had to pry up the ‘lid’ a bit in order to open the can. The Orbit One had cut through just fine, but the can itself had what looked like something sealing it closed. Not all cans had it, as the enchilada sauces were so easy to open that when it was finished, it popped up with the weight of the can opener and small magnet on the bottom.
One thing I really liked was the lack of sharp edges, even on the lid once removed. It also cut in a way that I could set the lid back on top and truly use it as a lid, since I didn’t manage to eat the entire can of pears in one sitting and needed to place it back in the fridge. The Orbit One also stayed quite clean throughout each opening as it did not come in contact with the contents within, unlike the manual one I had been using.
Cooking was easy since I could just push a button and let it do its thing, which I was thankful for. I had opened all of the cans and let them sit safely on the counter before adding them in one at a time. My old automatic can opener required me to attend to the lid every time, which made me just deal with each can as I opened it. It was great to have everything ready to go when needed.

Final thoughts
Overall, the ease of use and compact size really made me approve of the Kitchen Mama Orbit One can opener. While some of the cans (depending on the brand) were harder to pull open, each one was opened on the first try. It was so easy to just set it on top, push the button and go on to the next part of the recipe, knowing I could come back to the can being opened. I’ll definitely continue using the Kitchen Mama Orbit One can opener going forward, as it has made cooking just a little bit easier.
