The question is not whether a cloth band transforms the F-91W. It obviously does not. The question is whether changing the one component you physically feel all day makes this famously basic watch easier to live with.
Casio’s approach is refreshingly simple. The Casio F-91WF -1A, F-91WF-2A, and F-91WF-3A take the familiar F-91 formula and pair it with a cloth band made using recycled PET fibers.
For a watch built around simplicity, that change to a cloth band could matter more than adding another feature.
The F-91W formula already works
Casio has resisted turning the F-91WF into something more complicated.
You get the familiar digital essentials: a 1/100-second stopwatch, daily alarm, hourly time signal, 12/24-hour format, green LED light, calendar, and day/date display. Casio rates the F-91WF’s accuracy at ±30 seconds per month.
Those are modest capabilities compared with a smartwatch, but that is precisely the attraction.
There is no app to install, Bluetooth connection to maintain, account to create, or notification system demanding your attention. You look at your wrist, get the information you need, and move on.
The F-91W has been part of Casio’s lineup since the late 1980s, and its fundamental appeal remains easy to understand: a slim, lightweight digital watch that does a handful of useful things without demanding much from its owner.
The F-91WF does not need to fix that formula. It simply gives people another way to wear it.
Casio changed the part your wrist actually notices
The obvious difference is the move away from the familiar resin band.
Casio says the F-91WF’s cloth band uses recycled PET fibers and describes it as lightweight and comfortable, with resistance to scratches and stains.
There is an important distinction between specification and performance here. The recycled-PET construction is a documented material choice. Scratch and stain resistance are Casio’s performance claims, and long-term use will provide better evidence of how well the cloth band actually holds up.
The practical benefit is easier to understand.
A cloth band gives the familiar rectangular digital watch a softer, more casual character. More importantly, buyers who already like the F-91W but prefer cloth against their wrist can now get that combination directly from Casio.
Changing the strap did not cost the F-91W its disappearing act
The F-91WF measures just 38.2 x 35.2 x 8.5mm and weighs only 21 grams, with Casio specifying a compatible wrist range of 145 to 215mm.
That 21-gram figure matters because extreme lightness has long been one of the F-91W’s defining characteristics. The classic resin-band model also weighs 21 grams.
In other words, switching to a cloth band has not sacrificed one of the original watch’s biggest advantages.
At 21 grams, the F-91WF should be remarkably easy to forget about once it is on your wrist. A watch worn through a commute, workday, walk, and evening does not earn extra points for constantly reminding you that it is there.
For travelers and anyone tired of heavy watches, that disappearing act remains one of the F-91’s best qualities.
Three versions give the same idea different personalities
Casio offers the F-91WF-1A, F-91WF-2A, and F-91WF-3A. Its listed timekeeping and alarm/stopwatch functions mirror the classic F-91W formula, so the decision largely comes down to which version best suits your wardrobe and how you intend to wear it.
That approach fits the broader F-91 family. Casio has repeatedly expanded the design through colors and materials rather than replacing its basic functionality. The lineup has included traditional resin models alongside newer F-91WB variants using bio-based resin components.
The F-91WF takes that familiar formula in another direction without losing what made it recognizable.
Seven years between battery changes is difficult to argue with
The F-91WF’s other great trick is how little attention it demands.
Casio rates its CR2016 battery for approximately seven years. That creates a very different ownership experience from a smartwatch.
The F-91WF does far less than a smartwatch, obviously, but it also asks far less from you. Instead of thinking about charging every night or every few days, battery replacement is measured in years. For a travel watch, inexpensive backup, or simple everyday timepiece, that lack of maintenance is genuinely useful.
The cloth band does not turn it into a swimming watch
The outdoor appearance of a cloth band should not be confused with increased water capability. Casio describes the F-91WF simply as water resistant, rather than giving it a 5-bar or 10-bar rating.
Casio says the standard F-91W’s water resistance allows worry-free use while washing up or in sudden rain.
That makes the F-91WF sensible for normal daily exposure to water, but this is not the Casio I would specifically choose for swimming or watersports. If stronger water resistance is important, Casio has plenty of watches better suited to the job.
The smartest part may be how little Casio changed
The F-91WF does not need more sensors, menus, or a larger screen. It has endured because it is simple, readable, inexpensive, and easy to live with. The cloth band does not automatically make the F-91WF better than the resin original. The traditional resin version still has its own appeal if you prefer the original F-91W experience.
What the cloth band does is give the same basic watch a different personality without compromising its tiny dimensions, low weight, long battery life, or familiar functionality.
Who should buy the Casio F-91WF?
The F-91WF makes the most sense for someone who appreciates the F-91W’s simplicity but prefers the appearance or feel of a cloth band.
It looks particularly appealing as an everyday watch, travel companion, inexpensive backup, or low-maintenance alternative to a smartwatch. At just 21 grams, it should also appeal to anyone tired of wearing a substantial watch all day.
If you need serious water resistance, fitness tracking, premium materials, or connected features, this is not the watch for you.

But the F-91WF is not really asking existing F-91W owners to upgrade. It is giving people who liked the watch but never quite liked wearing its resin strap a reason to finally choose one.
