Sainlogic SA9 Smart Weather Station review

REVIEW – Recently, I have been paying more attention to this crazy weather and scrutinizing the details. After trying many apps, I decided I wanted to know the weather and the details exactly where I live, and could do so with a capable weather station. I received and reviewed the Sainlogic WiFi Smart Weather Station SA7, and while I really liked it, I was hoping for a system with a dedicated display as opposed to having to use a phone or tablet. Sainlogic responded to this desire and sent me the Sainlogic SA9 Smart Weather Station.

The Sainlogic SA9 Smart Weather Station is an advanced weather monitoring system designed for home or hobbyist use. It features a WiFi-connected outdoor sensor suite that monitors temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed and direction, UV radiation, and sunlight levels with a 7-in-1 sensor.

The Sainlogic SA9 Smart Weather Station is made from mostly plastic/ABS, and features a well-constructed, compact, weather-resistant housing that includes a built-in wind vane, wind cups, rain collector, thermometer-hygrometer sensor, and a bubble level for precise mounting. The weather station can be mounted via a pole, a foot mount, or a back plate. The entire unit measures approximately 12.9 x 4 x 9.8 inches and is powered by 3 AA batteries.
The kit includes a wireless LED display for the communication of data. The display features controls on one edge and a stand/wall mounting option on the back, as well as the AC port. The display measures 8.5 x 6.5 x 1.0 inches.

Performance

The Sainlogic SA9 Smart Weather Station is a nice entry-level device that pairs the SA9 weather station base with a wireless display. It offers good features and a lot of weather information. For the average homeowner, this is an easy-to-install and use weather station that allows you to keep an eye on the weather. Unlike the SA7 model that I previously reviewed, this model allows access via both the dedicated display and the Weatherseed app. Unfortunately, it is still restricted to a 2.4GHz-only wireless connection. It cannot connect to 5GHz.

Both the display and the App provide information for measurements and conditions like temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed, and wind direction. The outdoor sensor is mainly solar-powered, with battery backup for reliability. The display also has backup batteries.

It also included a nice feature that they call data logging, which provides up to 2 years of trend storage and exportable logs, and there is integration via Weather Underground for broader data comparison and sharing.


I like that there are multiple ways to mount the weather station. However, it frequently disconnects from the display even when only 30 to 40 feet separate them. As things are today, I reset the connection approximately 2 weeks ago, and the connection is broken again. The result is no updated information on the app and no outdoor information on the display.

When I received the SA9 package, I quickly realized that the difference between the SA7 model/package that I previously reviewed and this SA9 model/package is the wireless display. The SA7 is actually the SA9 weather station without the display. I decided to install everything that came in the SA9 package rather than just try to connect the display to the SA7 (actually SA9) weather station that was already installed. Now I am thinking that the new SA9 weather station that I received may be defective since it also disconnects from the app while the original SA7/SA9 model stayed connected. (I hope this is not too confusing)

Final thoughts

The Sainlogic SA9 Smart Weather Station is a nice entry-level weather station that, unlike the SA7, includes a wireless display. It is easy to set up and mount, and the Weathersseed app still connects and provides another option for all the information that I want and need. The display auto-updates to provide close to current information. However, the connectivity between the display and the base station continues to be unstable, which results in no information for outdoor conditions.

• It is compact and looks clean and interesting when mounted
• It is easy to mount.
• Provide a lot of useful data
• The display is clear and nicely presented

What needs to be improved?

• Only supports 2.4GHz WiFi (no 5GHz)
• The display frequently loses connection with the base station, and sometimes does not display all the info
• Batteries should be included for both the base station and the display.
