Design and features
This pool cleaner looks like a small, aquatic military tank, complete with treads. It has two modes of operation, corded and wireless, and 4 different cleaning modes you can set.
You can also operate this cleaner two ways, one via the controls on the top of the pool cleaner and the other via an app you can install on your phone. As of the time of this review, this particular model had not yet been added to the app, so we weren’t able to test this functionality.
There are five different cleaning modes that you can set on this cleaner. They are: Floor Mode, Wall Mode, Waterline Mode, Cross-Platform Mode, and Auto Mode.
Assembly, Setup
Assembly of this pool cleaner was very simple and it was ready to go almost immediately out of the box.
The only thing necessary was topping off the battery to give it a full charge. A full charge from zero takes three to four hours, but this was ready to go much quicker. The unit comes with a power base that both charges the unit for wireless operation and can also be used in corded operation. It comes with a very long and insulated power cable for both scenarios, as you can see below.
Performance
It’s windy here in Idaho and we live in a fairly rural area. That means that a pool can pretty quickly accumulate dirt and other debris, as you can see in the pictures. You can also easily see where the cleaner made a great improvement in things. The one thing that we noticed was that fine particulate matter did not catch in the trap and would just continue circulating. Perhaps something for the pool filter to catch, but a finer mesh would have helped, I think.
The bottom cleaning mode is fascinating to watch. To maintain pressure on the bottom of the pool it uses a jet of water pushing upwards. It scours the bottom in a set pattern and uses its tank treads to move forward.
Similar to the bottom, the side cleaning mode goes up and down the sides just under the waterline.
Here’s a pretty good representation of the amount of water that is being pushed out by the pool cleaner as it goes about.
Perhaps the oddest thing to watch this pool cleaner do is clean the waterline. It looks like it’s trying to climb out of the pool as it bounces in and out of the water as it works its way around the pool. I don’t have a good picture of this mode, but it’s a tad comical to watch.
The fourth mode that you can set is cross-platform, which is intended for things such as stairs. There aren’t any stairs in this pool, so it wasn’t something we could test.
The fifth mode is auto mode, where you just set it and forget it and it goes about cleaning in its own algorithm and patterns.
Cleaning the trap on the pool cleaner is a breeze. You just pull the mesh basket out, dump everything it has gathered, and rinse.
Final thoughts
This is a pretty great pool cleaner. Having both a tethered and wireless option is great and it really cleans things well. It would be nice if it could collect some of the finer particulates, but it definitely catches the big stuff and makes a difference. We found that it could do a full pool cleaning on a single charge. Tethered, that’s not a concern, but running wireless just make sure that you’re keeping the battery topped off. Overall, I definitely recommend for a wide variety of pools.
What I like about the BuBlue BuHybrid L6 Pool Cleaner
- Does a decent job cleaning
- Cleans high up on the pool walls
- Simple to select what pool features you want cleaned
- Intuitive setup and use
What needs to be improved?
- Only captures large particulates and the small stuff gets blown back
- Switching modes mid-cycle is difficult. You have to turn it all the way off and on again
- Model needs to be added to the app. I expect this is already in the works
