Design and features

My parents put a large in-ground pool in our backyard when I was a kid. My siblings and I (and many of our friends) learned to swim there. We’ve spent thousands of hours splashing, floating, and lounging, building countless cherished memories. For more than 50 years, Independence Day has marked our annual family reunion around that pool. We have much to be thankful for, mainly for my mother’s continuous efforts. She spends dozens of hours and large sums of money each year to keep it crystal clear. She’s used an Aiper 1500 pool cleaner since 2021 with good results, but being a Gadgeteer, I’m always looking for the newest products and was thrilled to have a look at WYBOT’s new S2 Pro pool cleaning robot.

It arrived in a large box. It’s heavy and well-packed.

What interested me most about the S2 Pro is the self-charging station. Like a robotic vacuum, when it needs juice, it locates the base and parks itself to feed.

The base has two buttons, one for sending the robot to clean and the other for bringing it home.

I was surprised to hear faint clicking when pressing the “Home” button. I can’t verify, but I think S2 Pro uses sonar to locate the base. Cool!

WYBOT includes adhesive pads for attaching the base mounting bracket to the pool wall. They require careful attention to ensure the location is clean and need 48 hours for proper adhesion. I would have preferred an adjustable mounting frame to suspend the bracket from the side of the pool, but I understand this is wishful thinking because of the vast differences in pool designs.

The base is removable, but the bracket is permanent.

Should your needs or location not need the base, WYBOT includes a power adapter that connects to a plug under a waterproof cover.

A row of green LEDs indicates the charge level and status during charging. They also indicate power on (blue), connecting to the app (purple), low battery (yellow), and fault (red)

The power supply is a brick. WYBOT accidentally sent one with a European plug but will send me one with a North American version. For now, I can use an adapter.

No pool should have a kiddo-reachable electrical outlet within arm’s length. Use this extension cord to reach the socket, but ensure it’s only plugged into a GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter) socket and the cord routed to prevent tripping and damage.

An LED on the base will illuminate to let you know it’s getting power.

The WYBOT S2 Pro pool cleaner has two onboard buttons for power and cleaning modes. A press cycles “Walls only,” “floor only,” or “both.”

Heavy-duty tank treads move the WYBOT S2 Pro around with ease. Occasionally, the Aiper 1500 would get stuck on the pool’s main drain. The S2 Pro had no troubles. Well done, WYBOT!

An opening in the bottom draws water, debris, leaves, and crud into the S2 Pro’s body. The amount of flow is impressive, pushing enough water to agitate water at the surface, even at the 9-foot-deep end of the pool.

The included hook snaps into a pool pole and fishes the robot out when cleaning finishes.

Initially, I thought it might be challenging for Mom to pull the WYBOT S2 Pro robot out of the pool, but the solid handle makes it effortless.

Mesh and foam filters inside capture anything that enters. Aside from a few leaves, the pool looked visually clean before starting the S2 Pro. I was stunned by the amount of grime it captured. After three and a half hours of cleaning, the pool previously only looked this good with manual vacuuming. Both filters are easily removable and clean up nicely with a garden hose. Bravo, WYBOT!

WYBOT’s app connects the S2 Pro to Wi-Fi to customize cleaning. It starts by letting the system know the pool shape.

The S2 Pro appears in the device list along with the current air temperature.

The app’s main page can summon the robot back to the charging station, send it cleaning, operate it “remote control car style,” or change the cleaning mode.

The cleaning pattern for the pool floor is selectable. Mom liked the cross pattern best.

The cleaning pattern for the walls is configurable, too!

What I like about the WYBOT S2 Pro Pool Cleaning Robot

  • Self-charging! Woo!
  • Self-parking
  • Fabulous cleaning!
  • Configurable cleaning paths
  • Long run time
  • Sturdy handle

What needs to be improved?

  • Maybe add an adjustable bracket for less permanent mounting

Final thoughts

WYBOT S2 Pro Pool Cleaning Robot 12

WYBOT’s S2 Pro Pool Cleaning Robot keeps crud from creeping into my Mom’s pool with performance that rivals manual vacuuming. The self-charging function is top-notch, the app makes it easy to control, the filters are effortless to maintain, and the long run time is excellent. Mom and I are both delighted! Getting this for her is just a tiny “thank you” for so many years of her love, care, and pool-cleaning efforts! Thanks, Mom! And thanks, WYBOT, for making the job so much easier!

  1. Gadgeteer Comment Policy - Please read before commenting
  2. An interesting idea… But I’d really worry about the base damaging the vinyl liner of the pool. We’re currently dealing with locating a liner leak. A difficult and expensive process!

Also, considering the debris collected I feel like I’d be taking it out all the time to clean it anyway. We currently use a corded robot.

Would be cool to hear a long term use update on this product!
