REVIEW – When you’re taking pictures or video with your smartphone, you need good lighting to make those images or content the best they can be. One solution for lighting is a ring light and today I’m going to show you the Taotronics LED light stand.

What is it?

Taotronics LED light stand is a height-adjustable ring light on a tripod stand that has built-in touch controls and a handheld remote.

What’s in the box?

Design and features

The Taotronics LED light stand has 2 parts. There’s the LED ring light that the built-in spring-loaded phone holder.

This part also has an integrated touch controller that lets you toggle power and adjust the color temperature and intensity of the LED ring light.

The back of the ring light module has a power connection for the included AC adapter and there’s also a USB port so you can power your phone while it’s in the phone holder.

The ring light has a 12 inch diameter and a color temperature range 2700K – 6500K. It screws into the top of the tripod while still allowing you to rotate it 360 degrees to direct the light.

You can also rotate the light ring vertically which I didn’t even realize until I read the user manual (I guess it does help to read them sometimes! 😉 )

Built into the middle of the ring light has an adjustable gooseneck phone mount. The phone holder is spring-loaded and takes some effort to pull the jaws apart to accommodate an iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Also included with the Taotronics LED light stand is a 2nd phone holder that you can attach to the tripod.

This holder has a small latch that secures around the “neck” of the tripod below the ring light.

The Taotronics LED light stand’s tripod is lightweight and folds up for easy storage and portability. It even comes with a drawstring pouch to store it in, but there’s no storage pouch for the ring light which seems a little odd to me.

The legs of the tripod are adjustable so that you can customize the height of the ring light from 17 up to 78 inches (430-19900mm). They also have locking latches to keep the tripod secure.

Controlling the ring light is done either through the built-in controller on the ring light itself or with the included handheld remote control. The controller on the ring light uses touch controls I seem to have problems with depending on which fingers I use to press the touch buttons. I find that the controller works much better for me. The remote has buttons to toggle power, adjust the intensity, color temperature, and can even pair with your phone via Bluetooth to be used as a shutter button.

As mentioned earlier in the review, this light has a color temperature range of 2700K – 6500K. That is a warm yellow light to warm white and all the way to a cool white light. It’s also really bright so it’s not fun to use it to take selfies unless you like staring into the sun.

Here are some examples. You will notice the glare on my glasses. I didn’t try to remove it because I was just wanting to show examples of how light temperature can make skin tone look different. Both sets of pics are at full brightness and in each of the color temp ranges.

What I like

  • Easy to assemble
  • Adjustable color temp and brightness
  • Can adjust the angle of the light

What I’d change

  • Include a storage pouch for the ring light too
  • Add the ability to adjust the ring light’s angle vertically as well as horizontally

Final thoughts

The Taotronics LED light stand is another great gadget to add to my photography toolbox. It’s easy to assemble, has a range of brightness levels and color temps, comes with a handheld remote control, and is fully adjustable. It’s a winner!

  2. I always place the imaging device behind the ring light to prevent any shadows from being cast on the subject. Also, try setting the light temperature to match the bulbs used for your ambient lighting.
