REVIEW – Each year on average in the United States a person throws away about 100 pounds of produce. From limp broccoli, wilted greens to banana peels, all of which end up in the landfill rather than being composted. The Bamboozle composter is a great way to start reducing the amount of produce you waste by being a visually appealing and easily accessible place to throw all your scraps.

Design and Features
In my house, the Bamboozle composter sits on the counter next to the sink. We put all of our food scraps in the bin and once it is full we empty it out into the outdoor compost pile. It can take up to a week for us to fill the bin but it never started to smell. Often when you lift the lid on a compost bucket, flies and the smell of decay waft out but the ventilation holes along with the charcoal filter prevented both from forming.
The bamboo handle makes it easy to carry and rotates out of the way when the bin is tipped over. It is also sturdy enough to be gently knocked against the outdoor compost to get out any scraps the may stick to the inside. Once emptied, I stick the bin, lid and the filter all separated in the dishwasher and set it back on my counter once clean.
I’ve used the same filter since I got the bin and it still seems to be working. Bamboozle sells replacement charcoal filters but the company also suggests buying filters at your local hardware store and cutting them to size.
The first day I had the bin on my counter, my cats were curious about the new object and tried to knock it over and get the lid off. The base is wide enough to prevent them from tipping it over and with the filter killing off any smell, my cats lost interest in the bin very quickly which is a huge bonus for me.
What I like
- Made from eco-friendly bamboo
- Durable and easy to wash
- Absolutely no smell or flies
What I’d change
- Slightly bigger bucket to hold large rinds
Final thoughts
While there are cheaper countertop compost bins available, the fact that the Bamboozle composter is completely biodegradable adds to the idea of reducing waste and converting it into something usable. The downside is you have to have enough yard space to be able to build and sustain a compost pile as the bin isn’t big enough to actually complete the composting process. The ease of cleaning and lack of smell means it has earned a permanent spot on my counter.
