REVIEW – Vosteed has gotten quite a reputation for offering great EDC pocket knives at exceptional prices. And if you didn’t know, they also love to name most of them after animals. One of my favorites is the Raccoon I reviewed last year. Now they’ve released the Porcupine. How does it measure up? Is it worthy of the Vosteed brand? Would it fit your EDC needs? Let’s check it out.

Design and features

At first glance, the Vosteed Porcupine looks like your run of the mill button lock pocket knife.

But Vosteed calls it a top liner lock so what gives? Well, if you look down from the top, you see that the button actually presses to release a liner lock at the top of the knife rather than at the bottom like a traditional liner lock.

That a killer design idea! It keeps all your digits away from the cutting edge when closing the knife and for those of us with large hands, it’s much easier to disengage. On top of that, you can still deploy the blade using the button if you want to. If you prefer, you can use the large thumb hole to flick it open. I actually find it easier to spydie fick it open, so the Porcupine is fidget friendly as well.

The blade shape is my personal favorite, a drop point. And this one has a big belly making it perfect for slicing and dicing. The satin finish is also my personal preference and Vosteed nailed it here.

The blade steel is 14C28N which is known for it’s edge retention, corrosion resistance, and hardness. According to Vosteed, the Porcupine has a rated hardness of HRC 59 +/- 1. All of this together makes for a great everyday use blade.

I’m guessing the Vosteed Porcupine got its moniker due to all the jimping. This thing has jimping everywhere. On the blade, there are two places on the spine with a generous amount, one course area for your thumb and a finer section near the tip for your index finger.

The liners are also covered with jimping to allow good grip and control. The wide Micarta handle scales are the chef’s kiss, giving me a full four-finger grip.

The brass accents are a nice touch. You got brass washers around the pivot point and a brass back spacer/lanyard hole.

Performance

The Vosteed Porcupine knife performs as expected. It handles all my necessary everyday uses perfectly, whether it’s opening packages, cutting zip ties, or an apple. The blade shape and jimping help me keep the knife in control for both push and pull cuts. The liner lock keeps the blade rock solid, with no lock rock or wiggle in the blade, as far as I can tell. Caged ceramic bearings make for smooth opening and closing of the blade, too.

If I had a gripe, the only thing I can find to fault the Porcupine is the use of both T6 and T8 torx screws. It would’ve been nicer if Vosteed used T8s throughout the construction. They aren’t as prone to stripping and you wouldn’t have to have two screwdrivers or switching bits when you want to clean and maintain it.

Final thoughts

I probably sound like a shill. My reviews have always been positive for any Vosteed knife I’ve reviewed. I can’t help it. I really like them, whether it’s the Thunderbird, the Labrador, or the Porcupine. Vosteed makes a great knife. Yes, they are a Chinese company but don’t let prejudice keep you from getting a great knife. All their knives are made in-house, and they collaborate with different designers to make a quality product at great prices. A good knife is a good knife no matter where it comes from. Keep ’em coming Vosteed!
