Not too long ago I bought what I thought was a pricey insulated cup for my cold drinks.  When I spotted the Takeya ThermoTumbler 20 oz., I thought “this looks familiar”, so I thought I’d see if there were any differences.

takeya thermo tumbler-01• Double-wall vacuum insulation keeps your drink cold or hot for hours.
• Clear shatterproof see- thru Tritan Sip Lid
• Perfect for your favorite coffee, tea, water, cocktail, beer, and more.
• Fits in most cupholders
• Sweat free double wall construction
• 18/8 premium food grade stainless steel

Just another cup?  No!  There’s a sturdy stainless steel interior and exterior, as well as vacuum insulated in between layers.

I really, really like this turquoise color.  It really stands out in a sea of bland stainless tumblers.

Turn it over and you’ll see that it’s made in China.

The clear lid has a sip slot and a small vent hole.  If you think this looks somewhat familiar…

Well, you’d be right.  On the left is the 20 oz. Takeya, and on the right is the Yeti Rambler 20 tumbler.  Both are made of 18/8 stainless steel.takeya thermo tumbler-07 takeya thermo tumbler-08

There are a lot of similarities.  They’re the same size.  They look the same on the inside.  The lids are pretty much identical, too.

To put these two tumblers to the test, I filled both with equal volumes of water and chilled them both overnight.  (No, I didn’t use that bottled Pellegrino).takeya thermo tumbler-10Next, I took them out and measured the room air and water in both tumblers about once an hour.  There are gaps, of course, when I had to do things like… sleep.  For consistent measurements, I used my Thermopen Mk4 and set to single degree F resolution.  takeya thermo tumbler-11Here’s a chart of just raw data.  The Yeti hung on to the cold for just a teeny bit longer, but a 1 degree F difference isn’t a whole lot.  I could re-test multiple times with hot water as well, but I got REALLY tired of checking temperatures after a while.

Here’s the same in chart format.

The Yeti tumbler lists for $29.99, while the Takeya ThermoTumbler 20 oz. is a little more affordable at $24.99, plus you have a choice of four colors or plain stainless (like the Yeti) for pretty much the same performance.

Pros:
  • Your choice of 5 finish colors (including stainless). Fits in most cupholders. Pretty much the same as the slightly more expensive Yeti Rambler.
Cons:
  • Don't know how well the paint will hold up to abuse, but you can always pick the paint-free stainless finish.
