The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are coming this September, and the rumor pile is too big to ignore. We’re tracking a 2nm A20 Pro chip, a Dynamic Island reportedly shrinking as Face ID moves under the display, a possible variable aperture, a Dark Cherry finish replacing last year’s orange, 12GB of RAM across the Pro lineup, and Apple’s second-gen C2 modem with broader satellite connectivity.

The lineup is splitting up. The standard iPhone 18 isn’t launching this fall, and a foldable iPhone is reportedly arriving with the Pros. Pricing is the other surprise: analysts suggest Apple is holding the base price flat and raising higher-storage tiers to absorb the new chip, RAM, and modem costs.

Some of these iPhone 18 Pro Max leaks land from strong supply chain sources. Others are still soft. Here’s what’s worth tracking, what’s not, and what to flag with skepticism.

When the iPhone 18 Pro is launching

Expect an announcement the second week of September 2026, with pre-orders that Friday and devices on shelves a week later. The on-sale date is either Friday, Sept 18 or Friday, Sept 25, with Sept 18 more likely. The standard iPhone 18 is being pushed to spring 2027, a real break from the usual September rollout.

The new A20 Pro chip and what it means

The biggest hardware story is the A20 Pro chip on TSMC’s 2nm process, the first true node shrink for Apple silicon in three years. Reports point to a 15% CPU boost and 30% better efficiency over the A19 Pro on 3nm.

Pair that with 12GB of RAM across the Pro lineup, and you’re looking at a phone built to carry the next wave of on-device Apple Intelligence features. The efficiency gains show up most in sustained workloads like video editing, gaming, and longer AI tasks where current iPhones get warm fast.

A smaller Dynamic Island and a cleaner front

Leaks split three ways on the Dynamic Island. One camp puts the cutout going from 20.76mm to 13.49mm, around 35% narrower. Another has the reduction closer to 25 to 30%. A third says the redesign has been pushed to the iPhone 19, with Apple still A/B testing two front-panel molds as of April.

If it ships, the change comes from moving part of the Face ID sensor stack under the display. The flood illuminator and dot projector go beneath the OLED, while the front camera and proximity sensor stay put.

Camera changes worth paying attention to

The headline upgrade is the rumored variable aperture lens on the main camera, which would let the lens physically adjust how much light reaches the sensor. A Korean supply chain report says the component has entered production. Apple hasn’t confirmed it, but this one’s looking less speculative.

A 24MP front camera and a wider-aperture 48MP telephoto are also in the leak pile. The megapixel count isn’t changing, but the wider aperture means better low-light reach and stronger background separation on zoom.

Battery, modem, and connectivity upgrades

Battery is one of the strongest threads, particularly on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Digital Chat Station points to a 5,100 to 5,200 mAh cell on US units (China gets 5,000 mAh), up from 5,088 mAh on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The capacity bump is modest at barely 2%, so most of the runtime gain rides on A20 Pro efficiency. Leaks expect mixed-use runtime to clear 40 hours, past Apple’s stated 39 hours on the 17 Pro Max.

Dummy model leaks show a slightly thicker camera plateau on the Pro Max, growing from around 11.23mm to 11.54mm. That’s most likely tied to the variable aperture mechanism, not a larger battery. The body itself doesn’t appear thicker.

Apple’s C2 5G modem is the other story. The second-gen in-house chip is expected to fully replace Qualcomm in the Pro lineup, with improved mmWave and broader satellite connectivity through emerging non-terrestrial network standards.

Colors, sizing, and design tweaks

The display sizes aren’t changing: 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro Max, likely matching last year’s 3,000-nit peak. The bigger visual change is on the back: a more unified design where the back glass and aluminum frame share a closer finish, plus a possibly translucent area in the Ceramic Shield around the MagSafe ring.

A new “Dark Cherry” finish (reportedly Pantone 6076) is replacing last year’s orange. Light Blue (Pantone 2121), Silver (Pantone 427C), and Dark Gray (Pantone 426C) round out the leaked palette. Apple often trims colors before final production.

How the iPhone 18 lineup is splitting up and why pricing isn’t moving

Despite higher RAM, a new chip node, and a custom modem, base pricing is reportedly holding firm. Ming-Chi Kuo, the TF International Securities analyst with the longest-running track record on Apple supply chain calls, and Jeff Pu, the GF Securities analyst known for accurate early reads on iPhone RAM and chip timing, both point to a two-tier strategy: keep the entry price flat, then raise prices on 512GB and 1TB tiers to absorb the cost. The iPhone 18 Pro stays at $1,099 and the Pro Max at $1,199.
The base iPhone 18 isn’t launching this fall. Apple’s moving to a split release: Pro models and a foldable in September 2026, the standard iPhone 18 in spring 2027. An iPhone Air 2 is in the leak pile too, with its window split between fall and spring. A foldable iPhone Ultra (or iPhone Fold) is expected alongside the Pros, with chatter about a slightly delayed on-sale date.

What’s solid, what’s still soft

The chip, RAM, modem, 24MP front camera, variable aperture, and battery numbers look the most solid. Variable aperture entered production in April per ETNews, and the 24MP front sensor is corroborated across multiple supply chain leaks. The Dynamic Island redesign is now the loudest contested rumor: 35% smaller, 25 to 30%, or not shipping at all. Colors look firm at the Pantone-code level, but Apple often trims before launch. Base pricing looks steady; higher storage tiers may move.

The split lineup is what’s going to change buying behavior most. If you’re on a yearly upgrade cycle, this is the year the calendar gets weird. We’ll keep this updated as the keynote gets closer.
