REVIEW – I don’t know how the heck it happened, but I turned 61 years old this past June. What the actual heck?! I don’t feel that old. Age is just a number, right? Ha! But sometimes I catch my reflection in the mirror and I see wrinkles and lines and wish I didn’t because I’m human. When the offer came in to review the MEGELIN Laser & LED therapy mask, I read the info and wondered if the claims of it being better than all the other red light therapy masks were true. So I agreed and have been blasting my face with red light every other day for the past 30 days. Let’s see what happened.

Design and features

The Megelin LED Red Light Therapy Face Mask is a flexible silicone mask and neck mask that has 288 LEDs.

It comes with eye cups that you can stick in the face mask, but I found them to be very uncomfortable, so I have been using the mask without the eye cups.

The eye cups aren’t mandatory; they are just there for comfort. The light from the LEDs won’t harm your eyes according to Megelin’s manual.

The mask has eye and mouth holes, as well as a nose flap. There are also large ear openings on the side.

The neck mask goes around your neck and has a large bib like flap for your chest.

Before you can do your first session, you need to charge the controllers. There’s one for each mask and they charge via USB-C. Once charged, they will provide up to 80 – 100 minutes of use.

The Megelin Red light face and neck masks are easy to use. All you have to do is press the power button and the masks will start a default 10 minute session. You can use the buttons on the controllers to adjust the timing and switch modes. The available modes are:

M1 – Anti-aging mode
M2 – Anti-inflammatory mode
M3 – Spot fading mode
M4 – Daily mode – skin rejuvenation

The included manual advises users to start with 10-minute sessions 3-5 times a week for the first week, and then you can increase the sessions up to 15 or 20 minutes.

Here’s how I looked before I started the sessions. My plan was to use both masks every other day for a month to see if I could notice any changes.

I have chuckled every time I see myself in these masks. I look like something out of a horror movie 😉

How does it feel to wear the masks? The masks aren’t uncomfortable and fit well, thanks to the Velcro straps. They didn’t make me hot and sweaty, but you do have silicone against your face, neck, chest, so they might make you feel a little warmer than usual.

I was able to sit at my desk during therapy sessions while working on reviews and didn’t have any problems seeing through the eye holes. I had my glasses off, of course.

I didn’t notice any issues with photosensitivity during the first sessions. The only thing I did notice after the first session was my skin felt a little like I had sunburn several hours later when I layed down to go to sleep. It just felt a little itchy, not painful. I wasn’t even sure if I was just imagining it. The sensation was gone by morning and my face/skin looked the same, not red or inflamed.

Results after 1 month and a dozen sessions

Megelin’s product page for this device says that you should see improvements in fine lines and wrinkles in 3 weeks. It does not mention how many sessions and how long the sessions need to be to achieve this result.

I started with 10-minute sessions every other day for five sessions, then increased the time to 20 minutes per session for seven more sessions, maintaining the same every-other-day pace. Have all of my fine lines and wrinkles vanished in one month? Nope, I don’t think I can tell any difference at all there. But I have noticed something… an improvement. However, it’s not something that you can even see in the before-and-after pictures. When I run my fingertips over my cheeks, I can feel little bumps under the skin. I think my dermatologist called them either sebaceous hyperplasia or small subcutaneous cysts. They are harmless, but there. Well, after the Megelin therapy sessions, they aren’t as noticeable when I run my fingertips over my cheeks. It’s like they are “healing”. I also think my skin tone has improved slightly. These are all small changes that I might be creating in my own mind. It’s hard to tell at this point.

Final thoughts

I think I need a lot more sessions before I can confirm or deny that this product really can help decrease fine lines and wrinkles. If I didn’t notice the changes mentioned above, I would assume that this LED therapy mask wasn’t doing anything at all. But now I’m wondering if it is. So with that said, I plan to continue my every other day 20-minute session protocol for another 30 days and report back with a review update.
