NEWS – If you’ve ever sipped tea or coffee from a handmade ceramic cup, you know there’s something special about the feel and look of it. Now, imagine that same cup, but this time, it’s made by a 3D printer. That’s exactly what Ceramica Studio is doing, changing how we think about pottery.
I’ve been interested in pottery since my advanced art class in high school decades ago, and more recently, after I binge-watched the first 5 seasons of The Great Pottery Throwdown.
Ceramica Studio, based in California and run by Diego Monsone and Victoria Rodriguez, blends old-school ceramics with modern tech in a way that’s both beautiful and surprising. Their pieces, like espresso cups, dosing cups, and vases, look like they have been shaped by hand on a potter’s wheel, but when you take a closer look, you will notice that they’re actually printed layer by layer using clay. The result? You get unique shapes and textures that are hard to make any other way.
What makes this so cool is how much care goes into each piece. 3D printing with clay isn’t as simple as loading an STL model, pushing a button, and walking away. The clay, which is sourced in California, has to be just the right consistency and the special printer needs constant tweaking. And every piece still gets hand-finished before it’s fired and glazed. Even though you’re using a 3D printer, there’s still a real artist’s touch in every step. Plus, because the studio keeps production small, every item feels personal and one-of-a-kind.
People who love coffee, design, or just cool products are going wild for these ceramics. The dosing cups and espresso sets are especially popular because they’re not just pretty, but are also super functional for coffee lovers. And because Ceramica Studio shares their process on their Instagram channel, you get a behind-the-scenes look at how these pieces come to life, from the first layer of clay to the finished, glazed product.
Ceramica Studio is proof that technology and tradition can come together in an innovative and handmade way. Check out the video below that I stumbled upon, which shows the printers in action. You can also visit Ceramica Studio’s site to purchase some of their unique creations.
