FurZapper review – How much fur can a FurZapper zap? Turns out, not a lot.

REVIEW – If you have an animal that sheds – long- or short-haired – you know the aggravation of seeing those pesky hairs on every single piece of clothing you own. A new product – the FurZapper – promises to remove this irritation from your life. Can it be done? Is this the answer to the age-old question of “Dog hair, don’t care”? Read on and find out!

What is it?

A FurZapper is a rubbery piece that is inserted into the laundry cycle which promises to remove pet hair from clothes.

I made my peace with dog hair a long time ago. I’ve had dogs my entire life, and if you have a problem with me having dog hair on my clothing, we’re not going to be friends anyway. But my ex-wife was not of this mindset. She hated dog hair (but loved the dogs!) on her dark clothes with a passion, and we had lint removers and other methods of trying to contain it, all the while having three Shelties (in serial, not parallel!) during our life together. Jack, the latest one, is still around and provides me with daily snuggles, face-licks, and, of course, loose fur. Can these FurZapper squishy-rubbery discs bring about fur-free clothing?

Design and features

The FurZapper discs themselves are made of the material every kid has become accustomed to – it’s that stuff they make fake bugs out of. It’s not plastic or rubber, but it’s got that slicker-type stickiness to it that grosses out moms and delights pre-teens. The idea is to toss one or two into your washer, run the load, then stick it to the dryer door, and run that. The website has a video of a “mommy-blogger” who does just this and is suddenly fur-free.

Performance

I started with a single disc (directions said to use one per animal, and Jack is all I have at this point). The wash went without issue, and I stuck the FurZapper to the inside of the dryer door (although the wash – even though it was cold water, seemed to have somewhat lessened the stickiness of the disc). When I opened the dryer, there was no disc on the door. I found it tangled up in my clothing, but strangely devoid of fur. I mean – it’s just as clean as when the process started, and I have fur to offer in handsful! Well, there was a little lint on it, but no fur.

So I decided to go with two FurZapper discs for the next cycle. A week of clothing and life later… I tossed the week’s laundry in with both FurZapper discs. Transferred to the dryer after the cycle (I always use cold water and a high-efficiency plant-based detergent with no softeners/add-ons). I tried to stick the discs to the inside of the dryer, but they didn’t really want to stick. I just tossed them in as I did with the wash.

When the dryer finished, I started taking the clothes out and didn’t notice any lack of fur. (Of course, after 30 years of having Shelties, that’s become a blind spot.) When I came across the first FurZapper disc, I noticed that there was no fur on it at all. At the bottom of the load, I found the other, with the same result – no fur removed.

I will get my older daughter to try them since she has a short-haired dog. Maybe she will have better luck, but for me, I’m gonna just write this off as a failure.

Final thoughts

I want to believe. The truth is out there. I am a very furry dog’s owner (some would say property). Jack, my Sheltie, has appeared in loads of pictures and videos here over the years. He is the third Sheltie I’ve had, starting back in 1984. They are a great breed, and my kids loved having them around, despite their fur. I wanted the FurZapper to end, or even minimize, the constant presence of long dog hairs in my life. Alas, it was not to be.
