REVIEW – Here’s something you might not know about me. I’m a stationery nerd. I love journals, pens, and washi tape. If you don’t know what washi tape is, they are small rolls of decorative tapes that come in different widths and designs. You can use these tapes to decorate your journal pages. I love them, but finding a way to store them and have them easily available can be a challenge. That’s where a washi tape dispenser like Walden Woodworkers holder from Galen Leather can really come in handy. Let’s take a look.
What is it?
The Galen Leather Washi Tape Dispenser is a vintage styled wooden and cast iron holder for standard MT washi tape rolls (1.5 cm width).
Design and features
First of all, here’s a small selection of my washi tape collection.
The handmade Walden Woodworkers washi tape holder is available in either mahogany or walnut. The quality of the construction is wonderful. The wood is well finished with no splinters or rough edges. It reminds me of something you might see in a shop 100 years ago, especially with the brass plate on the front.
The dispenser has 3 parts. There’s the base which is made of wood held together with strong cast iron plates, a wooden dowel that holds the tapes, and a cutting blade.
The blade is like a steel hack saw blade with close-set shallow teeth.
To load the holder, you just lift out the wooden dowel, slide the tapes onto the dowel, and place it back in the holder.
The number of tapes that can fit on the 10 inch long dowel really depends on the washi tapes which come in a variety of widths.
The design of this dispenser is simple and easy to use. Once loaded, you just unroll the tape you want to use and pull it across the cutting blade to cut it to your desired length.
One thing to note is that the blade does leave the tape with a jagged edge that may or may not be to your liking.
I was only able to load 18 rolls on my Walden Woodworkers washi tape dispenser and since I have a lot more tapes, I had to be selective. Maybe I need another one (or three) dispensers. 🙂 Galen does mention that you can stack these holders, but that’s just to store them as you wouldn’t really be able to easily access the tape on any but the top dispenser.
What I like
- Vintage style
- Easy to use
- Well made and very sturdy
What I’d change
- Nothing
Final thoughts
Like all of Galen Leather’s products, the workmanship, ease of use, and affordable price make the Walden Woodworkers washi tape dispenser an attractive accessory for any stationery fanatic who has a collection of washi tape that they don’t want to hide in a drawer. I love it.
