3D printers are designed to print three-dimensional objects by laying down multiple layers of material to create the object. These printers traditionally print the objects in plastic, but some models can print in metal, glass powders and other materials. The Carvey 3D carving machine from Inventables is essentially a three-axis mill that carves objects from material instead of building objects from layers of material. Carvey is an enclosed tabletop machine that is small and quiet enough to be used in homes, classrooms,  and offices. It can be used to carve woods, metals or plastics.

“In the past few years we’ve seen an explosion in 3D printing, and we believe that 3D carving is the next step” explains Zach Kaplan, Inventables CEO. Carvey is for the maker in all of us, and we hope we can bring everyone the opportunity to create something exciting.”

Carvey comes with easy to use free design software called Easel, which was designed specifically for Carvey. You can create your own projects or load existing projects from the Inventables project pages. The Carvey 3D carving machine is priced at $1999 (plus shipping). For more info visit Inventables.

  2. My dentist has been using a carving 3-D machine for two or three years. I have had to have two crowns in the past couple years and it was very convenient not to have to wait for the permanent ones while they were sent out to be made. Instead, I was able to stand there and watch my tooth being printed on the same visit. The cost was not bad, either.
