A square G-SHOCK with a fabric strap shouldn’t cause this much debate. The Casio G-SHOCK DW-5600MNC-8A2JF does, because it takes the familiar DW-5600 shape and swaps the usual resin band for a stretchy cloth loop with a FIDLOCK magnetic mechanical clasp.
That makes it more than another color drop. It’s a stock story for buyers who missed the first run, but it’s also a comfort experiment that has split actual owners.

Which G-SHOCK square is actually in stock
The product shown is the Casio G-SHOCK DW-5600MNC-8A2JF, the Japan domestic market SKU of the DW-5600MNC-8A2. The visible watch markings match a classic digital square: PROTECTION at the top of the bezel, G-SHOCK at the bottom, and the familiar digital face layout with mode, alarm, chrono, and light labels.
The retailer page identifies this colorway as a gray bezel with a multi-colored cloth band. Casio’s official product description calls it the multi-colored sporty style: gray bezel and band with navy, orange, and yellow accents.
That detail is important because the DW-5600MNC line has three related looks. There’s an all-black version, a light gray version with neon yellow accents, and this gray, navy, orange, and yellow version.
The restock checks out, but it’s regional
The restock is real, but it’s regional. Casio’s Hong Kong and Macau official online flagship, shows the DW-5600MNC-8A2 in stock at HK$1,180. Sakura Watches in Japan lists the JDM variant available and ships in two to three business days. Amazon US has a Casio Store listing for the DW5600MNC-8A2 at $165.

For US buyers, the safer framing is this: the watch is available through select sellers, but the best price and warranty path depend heavily on region. If you want a domestic warranty, use a regional Casio channel or an authorized retailer when possible. If you want this specific JDM suffix, be ready for import-store trade-offs.
Why collectors noticed this one
The DW-5600MNC does something G-SHOCK modders have been doing for years: it gives the square case a fabric strap. Casio’s official Hong Kong product page says the polyester band stretches up to 2.7 times, and the FIDLOCK system combines magnets with mechanical locking so the buckle snaps closed and releases with one hand.
That’s the hook. The module itself is not trying to be a smartwatch, and this isn’t the solar or radio-controlled square many G-SHOCK fans ask for. It’s a familiar 5600 formula with a new wearing experience.
The core specs are still useful. Casio lists a 48.9 by 42.8 by 13.4 mm case, 53 g weight, resin and bio-based resin case and bezel materials, cloth band, shock resistance, 200-meter water resistance, LED Super Illuminator backlight, a CR2016 battery rated at about five years, stopwatch, countdown timer, multi-function alarm, hourly time signal, flash alert, full auto calendar, and 12 or 24-hour format.
Additional specs include mineral crystal glass, quartz movement, accuracy of plus or minus 15 seconds per month, a screw-on case back, and the magnet clasp. Those details line up with the broader DW-5600MNC spec story: practical, light, durable, and intentionally simple.

The strap is also the catch
The best reason to buy this watch is also the reason to hesitate. Professional and community reactions are mixed.
Worn & Wound’s hands-on review by Meg Tocci praised the concept but was sharply critical of the execution after six days with the DW-5600MNC series. The review frames the watch as a long-requested factory version of a popular strap mod, then describes Tocci spending those six days fighting to keep the watch on her wrist. She wrote that the magnetic clasp’s security depended on a strip that detaches with a “laughable amount of pressure,” and that the polyester fabric showed signs of fraying within days.
Reddit reaction is split in a useful way for buyers. One r/gshock owner who received the DW-5600MNC-8A2JF from Japan wrote that it was “very lightweight and comfortable” and that “it might be the most comfortable strap they’ve ever had.” The same owner added they were “not sure how the elastic will age or how it will respond to washing.” Another r/gshock owner started a thread calling the Fidlock version a letdown, saying the closed-loop elastic strap was awkward to pull over a larger hand even though it felt comfortable once on the wrist.
That’s the buyer problem in plain language. On wrist, this may be one of the most comfortable square G-SHOCKs Casio sells. Getting it on and off may be annoying if your hands are large, if you’re used to a normal buckle, or if you expected the magnetic clasp to work like a quick-release bracelet.
It isn’t the square for everyone
If you want the most function for the money, this isn’t the obvious pick. It doesn’t add Tough Solar, Bluetooth, Multi-Band 6, heart-rate tracking, or a modern memory-in-pixel display. It’s still a straightforward digital G-SHOCK at heart.
If you want the classic square with a different physical feel, it gets much more interesting. The 53 g weight keeps it light, the 200-meter water resistance keeps it useful, and the cloth band makes it feel closer to outdoor gear than a normal resin-strap watch.

There’s one more practical note. Casio warns that the DW-5600MNC contains magnets and shouldn’t be kept near electronic implants such as pacemakers and defibrillators. Casio and independent reviewers also note keeping the magnetic buckle away from cameras, mobile phones, and similar electronics, though Casio’s own product notes indicate credit card chips are not affected by this particular buckle. That won’t matter to most buyers, but it’s exactly the kind of small ownership detail you should know before ordering.
Should you buy the DW-5600MNC-8A2JF
Buy it if the strap is the point. This is a collector-friendly square for people who already like the DW-5600 shape and want Casio’s official take on a cloth-band, magnetic-clasp setup. The gray, navy, orange, and yellow colorway also gives it more personality than the all-black version without turning it into a toy.

Skip it if you want the most capable G-SHOCK square for the money. The strap experiment costs real money, and the module is still basic. If you care more about solar charging, atomic time sync, connected features, or a traditional buckle that opens completely, this will feel like a compromise.

For the right wrist, though, this is exactly the kind of oddball G-SHOCK that becomes memorable. It isn’t the smarter square. It’s the one you buy because you’re curious how a classic can feel different.
