REVIEW – The Hill Country Region in Texas, including the city of San Antonio, has very hard water. A large majority of our water comes from limestone aquifers. We have had a water softener in our homes since 1998, and it makes a huge difference in reducing calcium buildup in our appliances and bathroom fixtures. In the past few years, with the huge influx of influencers, I have noticed an increase in shower filters. These are filters that are attached directly to the pipe just before your shower head. I can see where they would be a huge benefit to those folks who rent apartments or homes where they can’t install a water softener. I wondered whether they could offer much benefit to me, given that I already have softened water. I decided to give the Weddell shower filter a try and see if it can actually make a difference in my showering experience.

Design and features
The Weddell Duo Shower Filter has a simple design that makes it easy to install and change the filters. The filter body comes in three colors: white, black, and pink. I was sent the white version. There are two connection ports. One at the top that connects directly to the pipe feeding your shower head, and the second one that you connect to the shower head. Both sides have rubber gaskets built in, and they also include plumber’s tape, which you will definitely need to prevent leaks.

The filters are attached to either side of the unit’s body. Both are clear, which allows you to easily see when it is time to change the filters. The filters are color-coded on the ends, and the covers have matching colors on their ends. Inside the main body, there are also matching red or blue colors indicating which filter goes where. It is impossible for you to put the incorrect filter on the side of the body.

Below are the pictures of the inside of the show body, showing the red and blue color coding to indicate which filter goes where. There is also the end of the red filter, which shows that its connection is a smaller circle than the blue carbon filter, so you can put them on the wrong side.

Assembly, Installation, Setup
The place where most people have difficulty installing the filter is when they either don’t use plumber’s tape, wrap the tape the wrong way, or don’t tighten the filter body enough to the pipe or shower head. Below is a picture of my shower head before I installed the filter.

After I removed the shower head, I made sure to remove any existing plumber’s tape. I then took the new roll provided by Weddell and wrapped it clockwise around the pipe threads. You always want to wrap plumber’s tape in the same direction you will be screwing on the connecting device. I wrapped the tape twice around the threads and pressed it into place.

Next, I installed the filter. I also used plumber’s tape on the connector to my shower head. You might want to use a microfiber cloth or some kind of cloth to wrap around your shower head connector and the filter connector up top, so your wrench does not scratch them.

Performance
I have been very impressed with the performance of the Weddell shower filter. Below is a picture of the white filter after exactly one month of usage. I did a bit of research and believe I need to clean the resin in my water softener, as it most likely has some iron buildup. When I look into the tank where the salt pellets go, I can see some brown scum. I believe that after doing that, the filter should last longer. The carbon filter was a bit darker, but not as noticeable as the white filter.
Reading others’ reviews and seeing their pictures of their filters after only a few weeks, I feel very lucky to have this water. Some apartments have very old piping and plumbing, and all sorts of crap are getting pulled into those filters. Weddell says the filter should last up to 80,000 gallons, but that assumes very clean water is coming through the pipes.
I could also tell a big difference in how the water felt, and how my hair has been acting. The water feels even softer. I have super fine hair, and it now has more body than before.
I was afraid the filter would reduce water pressure, but I noticed no loss of pressure. To replace the filters, you simply unscrew the covers from either side. You do not need to touch the pipe connections or the shower head at all. I don’t even need a ladder to change them.

Final thoughts
I have enjoyed using the Weddell Duo Shower Filter. It has made me realize that I need to clean out my saltwater tank for my water softener. The water is definitely softer with the filter, and I love how my hair is easier to style now. Replacement filters from Weddell and Amazon run about $26 to $30. After I clean my water softener resin, I will replace the filter and see if it makes a difference over the next 30 days.
