REVIEW – I’ve made no secret that I don’t like carrying keys. The simple fact is that I’m bad at keeping track of them, so I’ve tried to eliminate them from my life. I still have a few padlocks around, and while I try to use combination padlocks as much as possible, let’s face it: I think I have enough to remember without having to try and figure out what the combo was to that lock that I used to use at the gym. The Benjilock solves that problem by unlocking with your fingerprint. In fact, it’s the world’s first traditional outdoor padlock with fingerprint technology.

Design and features
You might be familiar with the Benjilock already because it was pitched on Shark Tank and on another TV show called Henry Ford’s Innovation Nation. It has been featured in Better Homes and Gardens and it is the product of one of the US Chamber’s Top Small Businesses in America. It truly is innovative.
The Benjilock model I reviewed is from the portable series, and it comes packaged in a standard plastic clamshell. They offer this lock in 6 sizes and mine was the largest of the range at 40mm. The Benjilock outdoor finger print padlock will last up to a year on a charge and can store up to 10 fingerprints for up to 10 users. It doesn’t require an app (which I really appreciate – I’m on my phone enough as it is!) and it doesn’t rely on Wi-Fi. It’s basically your standard padlock, but so much better because you don’t have to fuss with keys or a combo. You just press your finger to the reader on the bottom of the lock and it whirs open.

The Benjilock outdoor finger print padlock is a slick lock, and it feels more solid than any other padlock I’ve ever used. There is no gap between the body of the lock and the shackle, unlike the average hardware store lock. It’s easy to register your fingerprint and I only had to tap the sensor 5 times for it to register. A series of lights and beeps signals whether the programming is successful.
I primarily used the Benjilock to lock up my back gate while I was testing it and I never had any issues with this lock. It just works, straight out of the box. It rained only lightly while I was using it, and I do live in an area with a moderate climate, so I don’t really feel like I put it through the toughest tests. However, if you are using it for the gym or school or an indoor venue, I can attest that it did a great job under worse conditions than that. The Benjilock manual says it can operate within a temperature range of -4 degrees F (-20C) and 158 degrees F (70C).
The instructions encourage you to register more than one fingerprint just to be on the safe side because the Benjilock outdoor finger print padlock has no physical back up key. While using it, I found that my fingerprint was orientation-specific, so they also encourage you to register the same finger from different angles for enhanced security and convenience. The manual also says that using the same fingerprint repeatedly improves accuracy, although I never had any problem getting the lock to work. I consider that amazing because I’m a little like John Wick when it comes to my fingerprints working … sometimes they just don’t.

The Benjilock is heavy at over half a pound, which may be something to think about if you are going to have to carry it with you, although that is partly why it’s so secure. It also is pricey at $79.99. However, if you have an elderly parent or a kid who loses things and forgets things, it is probably worth it. Even I can’t lose my finger.
Final thoughts
I like this padlock. I wish it was less expensive, but it could easily be worth it if you have someone who has trouble with keys in your life, like me.

What I like about the Benjilock Padlock
- Works without fuss
- Seems extremely secure
What needs to be improved?
- It’s heavy, although I don’t know if that can be fixed without sacrificing security.
- It’s expensive.
