Barbers can be expensive, especially if you have to go several times a month. Today’s gadget under review is a kit from MaxGroom for a set of trimmers to handle both the “Scalp” hair and hair that is elsewhere. (Trust me, if you’ve never had your neck shaved with a straight razor, you have not missed a slight bit of terror! There’s a reason Sweeney Todd is so terrifying to some.) Design and features
MaxGroom has created a very nice package for both “scalp” hair and hair in other places that may require a bit more – um – finesse. The two trimmers operate on the same principle – dual blades that oscillate against each other at high speed – but the size of the blades is quite different.
The larger clipper (the adjustable blade clipper) has blades 1.75” wide, which can be adjusted to four different lengths. There are also four different length combs (3、6、9、13 mm) that can be clipped on to prevent hair shorter than a certain length from being cut. The trimmer is about 7” long overall and is a roughly cylindrical shape 5-6” in diameter.
The smaller trimmer is 1.5” wide, with guides that are 1, 2, 3, and 4 mm long and 4-5” in diameter.
There is a large, metal positive switch on the side of the larger one. It’s not going to get turned on by accident in your suitcase, unless you’re a very messy packer. (More on travel later.) The smaller one has a less aggressive slider switch, but it is in an indented area with a small tab sticking out.
Assembly, Installation, Setup
Very basic needs: Make sure the big one is changed. The smaller one can run with the cord plugged in.
When plugged in to charge, a very low-level power adapter is needed. I tried several higher-powered USB chargers, and only 5W chargers made the charging lights come on. Which may explain why they note that it recharges in “just 180 minutes!” (That’s three hours, for those keeping score at home!) They do arrive almost fully charged, and I’ll talk about batteries more under Performance. You can tell if you have an adapter that will work when the charge level appears on the handle.
Once you have the unit charged, decide how much guidance you need with your trim. Attach the proper guide comb, and turn the unit on. If you are “freehanding”, be careful, because these babies cut deeply and quickly!
Performance
I grew my hair out for a month, and then used the longest guard to buzz it all over. It’s pretty short, but I get comments about my “new look” from friends. I have a friend who has been cutting my hair with scissors for a long time, and will probably just let that continue, but the smaller trimmer is great for keeping my beard in check. I really liked the quiet operation and the guard, but it was a lot shorter than I prefer, even with the shortest guide.
As mentioned, these trimmers are quiet, fast, and can lop off a lot of hair in not a lot of time. The smaller unit is great for shaving under your chin, shaping your beard, and thinning it with one of the guide combs – if you want to have a Drei Tage Bart, this may be your ticket to super-stardom! (Be aware that the tongue-in-cheek lyrics are a little PG-13! But if you remember the ‘90s and Don Johnson in Miami Vice, you’ll get the idea of the “Three Day Beard” quickly.) I also used it for the back of my neck, where my hair grows back very quickly after a trim.
Final thoughts
I have had a beard on and off since leaving high school. (They were prohibited there, both by dress code and by parental code!) I usually would shave in summer for jobs, but since 1976, I have only shaved fully once – for my mother’s 90th birthday. (After 40 years of her saying, “Why don’t you trim that beard off?” every single time she saw me, I figured it would be a nice gift. I’d had that one for 40 years!) I took to leaving the smaller trimmer readily available for touch-ups. It’s much more accurate than the scissors I had been using, and less likely to bite. I do wish there was a travel sleeve just for it, because I’m not happy just tossing it in my toiletry kit unprotected. The included zipper case is more of a storage box for the full kit, rather than a way to pack the clipper for use on the road.

What needs to be improved?
- A smaller travel sack for either unit would be nice.
- I’d like to see a bit longer guide for the beard trimmer. The longest one that I used to test cut my beard way closer than I like. I’ll try in a few weeks with the larger one, but I think I’ll keep the little one only for touch-ups!
