REVIEW – Do you remember a few years ago when fidget toys were crazy popular? Most people liked them just because they were a fun new toy and for others, these “toys” are actually a tool that can help reduce stress and anxiety. Today I want to show you the Project Ratchet Ring. It’s a wearable piece of jewelry that also performs like a fidget toy/tool. Let’s take it for a spin (or more appropriately, a ratchet).

What is it?

The Project Ratchet Ring is a stainless steel ring designed by a father and son team in Sweden that features a specially designed mechanism inside that allows you to turn it in one direction, providing a satisfying tactile sensation and a clicking noise. It’s a stimming tool that can help people who suffer from anxiety. If you’ve never heard the term “stimming” (I hadn’t), it refers to repetitive movements, sounds, or actions that people use to regulate emotions, manage sensory input, or express themselvesWhile most people engage in some form of stimming, it’s often more prominent and noticeable in individuals with autism, ADHD, or other conditions. Do you twiddle your thumbs? Repeatedly click a pen, bounce your leg when you’re nervous? That’s a type of stimming.

Design and features

project ratchet ring 9

The Project Ratchet Ratchet Ring (I’ll call it the Ratchet Ring going forward) is a ring that is available in US ring sizes 7-14 and in 7 different styles. I received the Seigaiha style in silver (a Japanese decorative pattern depicting stylized waves).

It looks and feels like a regular piece of jewelry until you start looking at it closely and then you notice that the ring has what I can only describe as layers. There’s an inner layer and an outer layer.

One side has a pressed in lid. Can you see the edges? More about this in sec.

The Ratchet Ring is worn like a traditional ring on your desired finger.

But this ring spins with a satisfying clicking ratchet sound and feel. Note that it only rotates in one direction and it does make noise, so if you sit in close proximity to someone, they will hear it. It’s hard to describe the sound, so check it out in the short video below.

Disassembling the Project Ratchet Ratchet Ring

The ring can be disassembled either for cleaning or to adjust the sound and feel of the ratchet mechanism. Disassembling it isn’t difficult to do. There’s a card with a QR code in the package that directs you to a short video demonstrating how to disassemble and reassemble the ring using the included tool.

You insert the tool into the correct side of the ring and then tap it with a hard object.

After a couple of tries, the press fit lid will pop up and you can remove the parts.

There are three rings: the outer ring, inner ring and the press fit lid.

The fourth part is a tiny flat spring. The spring can be adjusted to provide a stiffer and clickier action. To do that, you lift up on the little section in the middle.

In case you lose it, an extra spring is included in the package.

The outer ring has the ratchets.

Reassembling the ring is just the opposite of disassembling it 😉

Final thoughts

I think the Project Ratchet Ratchet Ring is a well-made and well-designed fidget ring for people who just like fidget toys and others who actually need fidget toys. I wish it could rotate in both directions, but if that’s a requirement for you along with a must quieter fidget, then Project Ratchet has another ring called the Polar Ring that uses magnets! I wish they had sent one of those to me too 😉

What I like about Project Ratchet Ratchet Ring

  • Cool geeky jewelry
  • Ability to customize the click/stiffness
  • Well made and comes with a lifetime warranty

What needs to be improved?

  • Nothing
