REVIEW – I have been stranded one too many times in my younger years with a flat tire.  Ever since my first flat, I have always tried to be more prepared in case the situation arises again.  I do have AAA to help me out, but they often make you wait an hour or more on the side of the road for someone to change a tire.  I also like the ability to top off my car tires when on a road trip without having to find a gas station with a working air pump.  I currently have a portable air pump in one of my two cars, but I wanted another for the second car we own.  When the Vento Pro Smart Air Pump came up for review, I was lucky enough to get it.  Read on to see if it had a permanent place in my car trunk.

Design and features

The Ventus Pro pump works pretty much the same as other digital smart pumps on the market.  On the front of the pump you will find the main power button surrounded by buttons that increase and decrease your pressure settings, a mode button, and unit of measure button.  The LED display screen is above the buttons.

The bottom of the pump has four rubber feet and the air intake grill.

Ventus Pro 3

The top of the pump has the screw hole where the hose connects.  Below and to the left is a white LED light.  Long pressing the unit of measure button will turn the LED light on.  Long-pressing the same button will cause it to flash.  Long-pressing a third time will cause the light to flash in an SOS pattern.  Finally, a long press of the button four times will turn the LED off.    To the right of the LED is the USB-C charging port.  To the right of the USB-C port is the 12-volt port for the car adapter.   Please note that the car adapter will operate the pump, but it will not charge the pump.

Quickly pressing the U button, located above the power button, will change the unit of measure for the pump.  The pump will remember what the last unit of measure and mode you were on when you last used the pump.  It also remembers the previous pressure setting.  The available units of measure are PSI, BAR, KPA, and Kg/cm.

The mode button resides below the power button.  As you use each mode, the pump will remember the last pressure setting you set in each mode, which is a nice feature.  There is a car, a motorcycle, a bicycle, a ball, and a custom user mode where you can set the pressure up to 150 PSI.

The LED light is not large, but it can certainly illuminate the valve stem, making it easier to connect the pump in the dark.

Assembly, Installation, Setup

The only thing I had to do for setup was to screw the hose into the pump and charge up the battery.  When the battery is fully charged, the battery icon will display a solid green color.  The pump cannot be used while charging.  The battery icon will display Yellow when there is 30-60% power left, and red when there is 10-30% power left.

Performance

The first thing I used the pump for was to top off my motorcycle tires.  They use a standard Schrader valve.  My front tire needs 36 PSI and it was at 34.5 PSI when I screwed the inflator to the valve.   I used the plus and minus buttons to set my required pressure to 36 PSI. I pressed the power button quickly to activate the pump. When the tire reached 36 PSI, it automatically stopped.  I double-checked the tire pressure with my Joe’s Racing tire gauge, and it confirmed that the tire was at 36 PSI.

I also set my rear motorcycle tire to 40 PSI.  Both the front and the rear tires of my motorcycle required about 2 PSI each.  Next, I decided to check all four tires on my car.  My car tires require 36 PSI.  All four of my car tires also needed about two additional PSI to reach proper pressure.  I again confirmed the tire pressure on my car tires with my Joe’s Racing tire gauge, and it also showed 36 PSI.   I want to note that after adding 2 PSI to all four of my car tires and both of my motorcycle tires, the pump battery icon changed from green to yellow.   The pump took just under a minute to add 2 PSI to each of my car tires.

The last thing I used the pump on was the tires on our bicycles.   Both bicycles have Presta valves, which require the Presta adapter.

My bike was set to 80 PSI on both tires, and my husband’s bike was set to 85.  The pressure on all four tires was around 30 PSI.  The pump took less than a minute to inflate each tire.  You will notice that the battery icon has changed from yellow to green.  When I was done with the bicycle tires, the battery indicator was stuck at the yellow color.

Final thoughts

The Ventus Pro Smart Pump is very fast.  It will get warm to the touch, but I found that it did not get as hot as some other pumps I have used in the past.  The Presta adapter that came with the pump is excellent.  It remembers your last pressure setting in every mode and remembers the previous unit you used.  I also love that you can run the pump from the car adapter, should you forget to keep the battery charged.  My only complaint is that the battery may not be as powerful as some of the other pumps I have seen.  I had it fully charged, and it changed to the yellow 30-60% indicator after topping off only six tires (two were smaller motorcycle tires) with 2 PSI per tire.

What I like about Ventus Pro Smart Pump

  • Fast pump
  • Great Presta adapter
  • Did not seem to get as hot as other pumps
  • You can run the pump from the car adapter

What needs to be improved?

  • Maybe the battery is not quite as large as some of the other pumps out there.
