Walls of Williamsburg iPad Art Book App Review

I knew the iPad would make a perfect device for eBook reading, newspaper reading, web surfing and game playing. But I didn’t realize that it could also be the perfect device to replace large format coffee table books. You know the books I’m talking about, the ones you see in the bargain book areas near the checkout counters at Barnes & Noble book stores. The shelves are filled with wonderful travel, nature and art photography books that just beg to be flipped through. Now I have such a book on my iPad. It’s the Walls of Williamsburg by Kasper J. Jeppesen.

When you tap the app’s icon, you’re greeted with a thumbnail view of more than 100 images from the street art (some call it graffiti) decorated buildings of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York.

The interface is simple. Images are displayed in full screen and a swipe Left will proceed to the next image and Right swipe will go back to the previous image.

Each gorgeous image is 1600 x 1200 pixels, so you can use pinch gestures to zoom in on the details.

Tapping on an image will display the location of the artwork (if known) and will show you a filmstrip view that you can scroll below the image.

You can also export any image to the iPad’s Photo library so that you can use them as your iPad’s background.

I love stuff like this and it’s easy to lose track of time and end up spending hours viewing these photos. I hope we’ll see more and more photo books like Walls of Williamsburg.
