REVIEW – The newly released Oclean X Pro Elite app-connected electric toothbrush is super quiet, has induction charging, a higher frequency motor, and has other enhancements compared to the Oclean X model that I reviewed in December 2019. Is it worth upgrading?  I have one to review. Read on to see what I think!

What is it?

The Oclean X Pro Elite smart electric toothbrush is the latest toothbrush from the Oclean brand. It is an oscillating sonic-type brush similar to the Philips Sonicare models. The toothbrush reciprocates to pulse fluid between the teeth as well as along and below the gum-line and at the same time strokes the teeth and gums with bristles to remove plaque and improve gum health.  This study demonstrated that the focus and attention required to use the powered toothbrush can improve the brushing results. Other studies¹ have demonstrated that electric toothbrushes can remove more plaque than manual toothbrushes if used correctly. Electric toothbrushes can also be beneficial to people with limited mobility. The review sample also came with a spare brush head and a travel case.

Unboxing

The Oclean X Pro Elite is packaged in a rectangular telescoping box with an intricately textured pattern in a glossy finish on an otherwise matte grey box. The front of the box has a slightly less than a life-size photograph of the toothbrush. The toothbrush has the “Hi” icon displayed when the toothbrush “wakes up.” The back of the box lists some specifications and manufacturer details.

Inside the telescope cover is a box with two folds. The toothbrush is below a fold in a plastic sheath. The other fold has a compartment with the directions, the charger, and the wall mount magnetic adhesive adapter.

Setup

The two steps required for setup are the installation of the brush head and pairing the toothbrush to the app. The brush head is the Oclean p1 which Oclean recommends for standard cleaning.

The spare brush head comes in a blister package with information about the brush head.

The Oclean X heads are compatible with the Oclean X Pro Elite. They have large bristle groupings that are installed with beveled tops.

On the colored P1 head that came as an accessory, the blue bristles turn white with use.

Both the grey head that came with the toothbrush and the replacement white head have a rubber texture on the rear that can be used to clean the tongue.

Oclean also sells a host of other heads to cater to people with specific oral hygiene needs.

The heads may be ordered from the Oclean store. They cost between $4 to $5 each based on the quantity. Even though the Sonicare heads look similar, they are not compatible.

The US versions of the app do not fully recognize the toothbrush as of the time of the review.   I am completing this review using the international version of the Android app sideloaded onto my mobile so therefore the actual production release of the toothbrush app may have some differences. Pairing is a snap. Just put the toothbrush on by hitting the power button once and press the top of the screen to pair a new toothbrush. The app will ask which detected toothbrush should be paired and accepting will complete the process.

Hardware

The toothbrush has a square barrel with rounded corners, which helps it not roll off of the vanity but also provides a flat place to put the touchscreen and button. The finish feels very solid and has a texture similar to porcelain. It is a grey color that looks like it is made with a microscopic dappled finish. The grey seems to be similar to PANTONE® 17-5104 Ultimate Gray, which is one of 2021’s colors of the year, and a color choice that Oclean emphasized in the product announcement. The color doesn’t appear to be the same as the color swatches I see online, but the light used to compare these colors is not industry standard. Whatever color it actually is, I find it pleasing.

The base of the unit is labeled Oclean Elite and the bottom of the toothbrush is encased in a stainless steel cover.

Even though there is a steel cover, the unit is still chargeable using the included wireless charger, but also any Qi compliant wireless charging base. The toothbrush fits into the included charger which is powered by a USB. The max draw is 5W so just about any charing brick with work. The included charger has a silicone cover that helps balance the toothbrush. If the cover is removed the charger becomes a standard 1.5W charger that can be used with AirPods or similar devices. Because Qi chargers are showing up in hotel rooms the toothbrush may be able to be charged even if the charger is left at home.

The toothbrush also comes with a magnetic mount that has a 3M adhesive backing and internal magnets. This will allow the toothbrush to magnetically mount to a wall when it is not in use. The toothbrush is held in place quite well by the magnets inside of the holder. The magnets in the toothbrush also keep it upright against the back of my metal medicine cabinet.

The toothbrush also came with a travel case. The case is a glossy white plastic on the outside and a bright orange on the inside.

The case has a plastic hinge on one side and vent holes on the other side so that a wet toothbrush can air dry.

The top of the toothbrush has a steel bezel stamped with some required licensing data and a plastic bushing.

The most notable feature is the touchscreen, but the most appreciated hidden feature is the fact that the area directly adjacent to the screen is a capacitive user interface.

Oclean XProElite 23 Stroking up or down on the side of the screen is another way to interact with the toothbrush features. Using the interface in this way allows a full view of the screen while interacting with it. The screen is very similar to the type used on the Mi band 4 activity tracker except that the power button is a physical button rather than just a touch-sensitive area.

The main screen starts with the display of the first type of brushing, the intensity, and an icon displaying the battery charge. A swipe of the screen up or down cycles through the mode, intensity, duration, about, and back to the main screen.

By using the screen on the toothbrush you can brush your teeth in one of 4 modes (Cleaning, Whitening, Sensitive, or Massage)  at any of the levels the toothbrush is capable for 2, 2:30 or 3 minutes.  The toothbrush will report the effectiveness of the brushing, total effective time, and the percentage of time brushed in each of the 8 quadrants of the mouth. One new feature of the software I was impressed by is the ability to pause the brushing and then go back to it. The Oclean X only permitted you to abort a brushing session if you needed to pause to hear something, but the Oclean X Pro Elite permits the brushing session to be continued.

Software

The Oclean X Pro Elite has the same issue as the Oclean X did when I reviewed it in December 2019. The toothbrush will not communicate with the domestic version of the app. It will however work with the international version. The review of the software in December 2019 is still current as the software has only undergone minor revisions since then. The table below summarizes the pre-programmed brushing recipes that the app can upload to the toothbrush.

The plans menu has the following preloaded brushing programs:

Standard Cleaning: Suitable for people with normal, healthy teeth 2’00”
Strong Whitening: Suitable for wine lovers 2’30”
Super Whitening: Suitable for people who are seeking for deep whitening effect 2’30”
Sensitive Cleaning: Suitable for people with sensitive teeth 3’00”
Gentle Teeth Spa: Suitable for people with sensitive gum 3’00”
Standard Teeth Spa: Suitable for people with sensitive teeth 3’00”
Gum Care Cleaning: Suitable for people with sensitive gum 2’00”
Gum Care Cleaning: Suitable of sensitive teeth 3’20”
Newbie Whitening Mild cleaning force combined with light whitening mode: Suitable for people who can”t get used to the programs with gentle force. 2’30”
Braces Cleaning: Suitable for people with braces 3’00”
Strong Cleaning: Suitable for people with periodontosis 3’00”
Super Cleaning: Suitable for people who are seeking for deep cleaning effect 3’00”

The app may be used to program a custom brushing program with the following parameters:

  • Cleaning Mode Settings: Levels 1 – 32
  • Whitening Mode Settings: Levels 1 – 4
  • Massage Mode Settings: Levels 1 – 4
  • Sensitive Mode Setting: Level 1
  • Max Steps per custom program: 6
  • Step length: 5 seconds – 4 minutes

Once the use plan button is pressed it takes just a second to upload it to the toothbrush

Performance

The Oclean X Pro Elite is significantly quieter than the Oclean X. The brushing pattern of the Oclean X Pro Elite is also slightly different than the Oclean X in that the whitening is a consistent pattern that feels like there is a brief scrub at the end of each stroke. I evaluated the brushing placement detection by only brushing the lower right facial and upper left palatal. the brush mostly faces the same direction when brushing these two areas. While the graphic showed that The brushing was more thorough than it actually was, the brushing effectiveness was only 65%. This demonstrates that the toothbrush does monitor the location of the brush head and the reporting of the brushing location does relate to the effectiveness of the brushing session.

What I like

  • Nice size, balance, and feel
  • Easy to use even if without an app
  • Great feedback
  • Magnetic mount
  • long battery life
  • extremely quiet

What I’d change

  • need to get the domestic software working

Final thoughts

I am happy to review the Oclean X Pro Elite toothbrush after using the Oclean X for a couple of years. The Oclean X Pro Elite is significantly quieter, offers the ability to charge the phone from a standard wireless charger, and allows the user to pause the brush without stopping the cleaning. I probably would not have upgraded for these features if I did not already own an Oclean X but for those who are considering buying a new Oclean product, the Oclean X Pro Elite does offer an elite brushing experience. If Oclean announces that they have addressed the new hardware integration into the app I will comment about the news on this post.

  2. Could you please make a review about the Oclean W10 Water Flosser? It would really help me in making my decision whether to buy the product or not.

  3. What is the lifetime span of the Oclean toothbrushes from your experience?

I just bought the Philips Sonicare but came across the Oclean X Pro elite. I am leaning more towards Oclean X Pro elite but not sure if it’s worth it, if it wont last compared to the trusted Philips Sonicare.

    1. I think that it will last a very long time as long as it is not charged constantly. Batteries can only be recharged a limited number of times. Constant charging will needlessly top off the battery charge, depleting the number of full charges available to the battery.

  4. Hej , jag har haft min i en månad och sedan fick jag inte att fungera längre.
Det liser (blinkar)en blå prick i övre kant på displayen.
