Design and features

Some assembly required

The LawnMaster FD1503 electric wood chipper requires some assembly, but it’s not difficult and I was able to complete the whole process in about 20 minutes.

All you really have to do is assemble the frame and wheels.

The hardware and a wrench are included, which makes things pretty easy.

The included wheels are plastic, so you won’t need to worry about airing them up.

The even include hubcaps that snap in place.

The final step before you’re ready to start chipping is to attach the frame to the main body of the Lawnmaster. For this step, it does help to have someone assist you as you line up the bolts on the frame. But after that, it’s just a matter of tightening the bolts.

The 12 gallon collection bag is made of the same type of material that tarps are made of and it includes loops on the side that allow you to clip it below the shoot on the Lawnmaster easily.

The Lawnmaster has a handle that makes it easy to roll the device around your yard as you work.

Just be aware that the LawnMaster FD1503 is an electric wood chipper isn’t battery powered. You’ll need access to a power outlet or a long outdoor extension cord.

Up top is where you feed in the dry sticks and branches. The slot is sized to allow up to 1.8 inch (45mm) diameter sticks.  Notice that I said dry sticks. You should not use this chipper with wet sticks, branches, leaves, or other yard debris.

Operation is simple with the large on/off switch. There’s also an overload protection switch on the left that you can use to reset the chipper if there is a problem.

If the stick/branch is small enough to fit in the slot, then you’re good to go. It can even have some smaller shoots if they can bend to conform to the full width of the slot.

A paddle is also included that can help you push the sticks further into the chipper if needed. It should go without saying that you NEVER EVER put your fingers in the slot when the unit is powered on, or even off, for that matter!

If for some reason, the Lawnmaster jams, you can immediately turn it off, unplug it, and then you can open the unit to clear the jam.

There’s a knob below the handle that unscrews to open the unit. I found this knob to be really tight and I had to get a pair of channel locks to help me turn it for the first time.

When opened, you will see the dual replaceable blades.

Once you’re done, you can use the mulch in your garden!

Using the LawnMaster FD1503 is pretty straightforward as long as you understand what it will and will not do. This wood chipper isn’t large, so it can’t handle large branches with many offshoots/suckers.

I will also say that Lawnmaster should include a pair of safety glasses in the box. You will also want to wear ear protection because the chipper is loud when it’s running. Check out the video below, where I show it in use and explain the types of sticks that you won’t be able to chip with this chipper.

Final thoughts

If you only need to deal with light yard cleanup, the LawnMaster FD1503 is a solid choice. It’s easy to move around, simple to use, and powerful enough for smaller branches and twigs. For people with average-sized suburban yards, it’s an affordable way to keep branches under control without hauling them to the curb.

That said, it’s not the best fit for larger properties like mine. Because the chipper can only handle sticks under 1.8 inches thick, and they need to be fairly straight. For me, I’d spend more time trimming limbs to fit than it’s worth. For me, tossing them back into the woods is still faster. But if you live in a neighborhood with smaller trees or want to turn your occasional branches into mulch, this little chipper will get the job done.

What I like about the LawnMaster FD1503 Electric Wood Chipper Shredder

  • Assembly isn’t difficult
  • Works well for small sticks and limbs

What needs to be improved?

  • Include safety glasses and earplugs in the package
