Design and features
The Lemolify 4-in-1 Weed Trimmer comes partially assembled. I was actually surprised at the smallish size of the box it came in until I unpacked it and realized that the main shaft is segmented.
The control end and the trimmer head are already hooked up with the cable that runs through the unit. You’ll connect the three segments by sliding them into place with these pop-out studs that lock everything in place.
There are a ton of accessories in this all-in-one kit, including the grab handle you’ll want to install for control while operating the device. It locks in place on the shaft with a locking collar and screw.
Before you get down to business, you’ll need to install the trimmer head hood and the trim guard. The hood requires one screw to connect it to the trimmer, while the trim guard just snaps into place.
The trim guard can swivel out of the way when not required.
There are multiple blade heads included with the package. The first (upper left) is the lawn edger. This requires some threading of the string as part of the assembly. The second blade (upper right) is for brush clearing. Mine came with two pruning blades (lower left) for branches and shrubs. Finally, the Wheel of Death in the lower right is the mower blade.
All the blades are installed the same way. You’ll flip the unit over to find the post on the underside of the blade head.
Rotate the blade head to find the hole in the side of the wheel, and align it with the gap in the housing. Stick the alan wrench included with the kit in there to prevent the wheel from spinning.
Choose your blade and drop it on that post until it locks onto the collar as shown below.
There’s a brass/gold hasket that then goes on top of the blade…
… followed by this blue cap that sets everything in place…
… followed by this washer that clamps everything together. You’ll use the enclosed tool to tighten everything up as shown in the second pic below.
To change blades, you would reverse this process. Each blade follows the same install/uninstall procedure.
The unit comes with two rechargeable batteries that slide into the handle base to provide power. Each battery promises 40-60 minutes of operation and requires 3-4 hours for a full charge.
The button on the battery will show you how much juice is left before recharging.
If you want to use the wheels, some assembly is required to assemble the roller unit. You basically screw the wheels into the frame as shown below.
Now you use a locking collar to attach the wheel frame to the trimmer. You can adjust the angle of the post to set the height of the handle for a comfortable position for “mower” mode..
With or without the wheels, you can also position the blade head to multiple angles to accommodate different cutting modes. Push that big black button on the blade head to unlock and make your adjustments.
Once you’re all connected, you’ll squeeze the handle trigger to get things spinning. The max blade speed is 2000 RPMs. There is no brake for the blade. While releasing the trigger stops the power, the blade will stop spinning on its own.
The whole assembly is lightweight and easy to handle, but the build feels like it is made for light-duty work. We’ll talk more about that in the performance section below.
Performance
There’s good news and bad news in the performance of the Lemolify 4-in-1 Weed Trimmer, and some potential safety issues that you should be aware of.
Let’s start with the good stuff. The trimmer is a featherweight and super easy to maneuver. At a measly 6 pounds, it is easy to tuck around corners while edging the lawn, for example.
It’s also really easy to use in pruning mode. Here I am trimming a big shrub next to my driveway. The lightweight handling is great for reaching up and into tight spaces to access branches and corners.
The motor itself is not particularly powerful, however, so don’t expect it to take on super thick brush or branches. Lemolify advertises that mower blade as something you could use to mow smaller areas with the wheels on, and I found that the blade isn’t powerful enough to cut the grass in my side yard. Maybe it beat it up a little bit, but you’re looking at an area I hit multiple times in the pic below with no results. Maybe my grass is too thick? The blade is dull? I also found it difficult to find a decent angle for this sort of work that didn’t have me bending over, given the short trimmer shaft (I’m 5’10”).
The edger works great. You can see it leaving a trim trail below. There are no complaints about that performance. Please note that you’ll need to replace the string periodically, as shown in the second picture below.
The pruning trimmer works just fine on that shrub in my front yard, but I don’t know that it has the power to go through super thick stuff based on my tests. I also found that the batteries work fine for 25-30 minutes or more of regular use, so they seem to hold a charge as advertised as long as you don’t overtax them.
My biggest concern about this unit (besides the lack of power in some cases) the lack of a braking mechanism. The blade keeps spinning after you release the trigger and disengage power for 30 seconds or so until it naturally slows down or you bump it against something. If you’re not careful, that can be a particularly dangerous way to cut something you shouldn’t.
The method for adding & removing blades seems fine. It’s a bit of extra work and you want to watch your fingers around those sharp blades, but I have not had any issues with slippage after a few weeks of use. It’s not ideal in my opinion, but it is functional.
Final thoughts
If you have a small piece of property and are looking for an occasional-use multipurpose tool for general cleanup duties, the Lemolify 4-in-1 Weed Trimmer has a lot to offer. It’s got all of the things you need for trimming, weeding, pruning, etc. The build is lightweight, so I would not trust its durability for heavy-duty work like clearing heavy brush, thicker shrubs, or large areas of heavy overgrown grass.
The lack of a braking mechanism is a pretty serious safety issue in my mind. I get that this is a budget tool, but those blades will spin for a good thirty seconds before slowing down. I would think carefully about who is going to be using this device before purchasing this item.
What I like about Lemolify 4-in-1 Weed Trimmer
- Lightweight & easy to maneuver
- Good battery life
What needs to be improved?
- Lack of a blade brake is a safety issue
- Short shaft design may be uncomfortable for some in “lawn mowing” mode
- Not particularly powerful; designed for light-duty activities
