REVIEW – Each May, we give our pool vacuum a good workout when we open our inground pool for the year. At the end of last season, our third pool vacuum died. When we saw the option to review the AIRROBO PC10, we knew we’d put it to good use. This is our fourth vacuum in nine years. Here’s how it stacked up.

Design and features

Setup

The AIRROBO PC10 pool vacuum comes fully assembled. Before using it, you just need to plug it in to make sure it’s fully charged.

Ours arrived fully charged, which you can tell by the indicator light strip. It’s green if sufficently charged, blue if insufficient battery, orange means very low battery and red is an error message.

The AIRROBO PC10’s manual says it takes 2.5 hours to fully charged, which we can confirm.

Note that we did have one blip with charging. After about four or five uses, the indicator light didn’t come on when we plugged it in. Tech support suggested just leaving it to charge, which we did overnight, and then in the morning the green indicator light was back on like normal and it was fully charged.

One thing I like about this vacuum is the simplicity of its controls. There is no app to download or program to chose: You simply toggle between cleaning the floor, the walls or both (auto).

Once you’ve made sure it’s fully charged and you’ve selected your setting, make sure to tighten the cap on the charging port before dropping this into your pool.

Performance

To set it in motion, just lower the vacuum into the pool, and the track will start spinning and it will blow some bubbles before exploring your pool.

Word of caution: Don’t use this in a murky pool! I had the idea that this would help us with our pool opening, but I didn’t think about the fact that our pool is still too cloudy to see the bottom, especially in the deep end.

Minutes after putting it into our pool, it pretty much disappeared.

The manual says that when the battery runs low, it will automatically move to the pool edge so that it’s easy to retrieve… but ours ended in the deep end and even though it was relatively close to the edge, there was no way we could see it!

To find it, we took the pool cleaning brush and went around the entire area of the pool until finally we felt the vacuum. Using the hook that it came with, which easily attaches to a standard pool pole, it took about 20 minutes for my husband to hook it (blindly, unlike the photo below where the pool is clear).

We tried again when we had better visibility in the pool, and it was a much easier experience! It took just seconds. When you can see the bottom, it’s easy to find and retrieve.

From the volume of debris in the basket, I can tell it did a great job of cleaning the bottom of the pool.

To clean out the basket, just lift it up by the handle and click it open.

Airrobo poolvac 5

I gave it a good spray with the hose, which worked great.

I particularly like this vacuum for cleaning the bottom of my pool. While it did climb the walls, it did a better job in the shallow end.

Airrobo poolvac 13

In the deep end, it would make it up the ledge but not all the way up the wall… but the robot isn’t to blame!

To be fair, the manual has a trouble-shooting chart and says the chemicals need to be balanced to ensure the walls aren’t too slimy/slippery for vacuum traction: the chlorine should be a max of 4 ppm; PH 7.0-7.4; temp 41-95 degrees F; sodium chloride max 5000. Because we’re still in the process of opening and balancing our pool, plus the weather in Indiana has been unseasonably cold, our pool conditions aren’t ideal for climbing the walls.

For our purposes, where about 75 percent of the time I’m only using the vacuum to clean out the bottom of the pool, this vacuum does the job! And we’ll certainly try it again under better conditions.

Final thoughts

This vacuum is very easy to set up and operate and does a great job with cleaning the bottom of our pool. It’s a great buy at this price point, too.
