REVIEW – I have reviewed several e-bikes for The Gadgeteer and, in doing so, have found a new hobby. Each one has been different in some way from the last. Different-sized wheels. More or less powerful motors. Rear-drive or mid-drive motor. 1, 2, or 3 batteries. So many options. Another interest of mine would be electric scooters, or e-scooters. Except that the wheels on most e-scooters are too small for my comfort. Small wheels and rocks just seem like a head-over-heels trip to the ER to me. Enter the Hiboy U2 Pro Electric Scooter with 16″ Fat Tires and a seat! You read that right, 16” fat tires. Almost e-bike sized. It has a seat, like an e-bike. It even has a powerful rear-wheel motor like an e-bike. It has almost all the features of an e-bike, but it isn’t.

What is it?
The Hiboy U2 Pro Electric Scooter with 16″ Fat Tires is an electric scooter with e-bike sized wheels and tires, and a seat! It rides like a scooter with a 750 watt (810 watt peak) e-bike rear-wheel motor. It has front and rear mechanical disc brakes. Dual shock rear suspension. So many other e-bike features. What it doesn’t have are pedals, a chain, or any gears. Throttle only acceleration up to 25 mph (40 kph)! The U2 Pro rides, feels, and sounds like an e-bike, just without all that annoying, laborious thing called pedaling. Ugh!
Seriously, sometimes you just want to go enjoy the fresh air while having it move through your hair. Or go run a quick errand to the neighborhood grocery store without working up a sweat pedaling; this is the mode of transport that might meet your needs. Sure, you can accomplish that on an e-bike using only the throttle, which I have done many times, but the Hiboy U2 is so easy to get on and off, it’s almost sinful.

Design and features
The Hiboy U2 Pro Electric Scooter is in a class nearly by itself. It has all the makings of an e-bike, but it’s uniquely not an e-bike. In fact, while out riding the U2 Pro, I was approached several times by people asking me what I was riding. When I would tell them it’s an e-scooter, they would first comment on the large wheels, and then say something about how it looked very comfortable to ride. To which I would agree.

The U2 Pro is essentially an e-bike without the pedals, chains, or gearing that a traditional e-bike has. It has a very sturdy, all-steel frame, perfect for on-road and off-road adventures. The U2 Pro weighs a tad over 80 lbs (36 kg). This seems very heavy and comparable to many e-bikes. The weight is very well distributed, and the wide deck is the reason for the bulk of that weight.
The U2 Pro comes with a 48V 13Ah Li-ion battery that is captured in a water-tight steel box along with the e-scooter’s controller, under the deck. This low placement lowers the U2 Pro’s center of gravity, helping it to be very stable. Hiboy’s range estimate for the U2 Pro is about 34 miles (54 km). Of course, this depends on the weight of the rider and how many hills you travel over.

The handlebars are high and swept back slightly for comfort and control. On most e-bikes, the rider sits up high and needs to bend forward to grab the handlebars. On the U2 Pro, there’s no need. Just sit back and ride. The angle, width, and grips are designed for ease and comfort.

The U2 Pro’s display is very large, bright, and colorful. It shows all the necessary data, such as speed, battery level, odometer, error messages, and a few other pieces of information.

Propelling the U2 Pro is a powerful, rear-hub motor. The same kind many e-bikes use. It is a brushless rear-hub 750-watt electric motor, with a peak output of 810 watts when it’s needed. The power of this motor is controlled by the quarter-turn throttle on the right-hand side of the handlebars. The motor is nice and powerful enough to get the U2 Pro up to a maximum speed of 25 mph (40 kph).
The U2 Pro has 3 speeds, which get it going from a nice leisurely ride up to blowing your hair back. Level 1 goes up to 10 mph (16 kph). Level 2 gets the U2 Pro up to 15 mph (24 kph), and level 3 up to 25 mph (40 kph). The higher the speed level, the more battery power is consumed.
Next to the speed selector is the headlight switch and the horn.

The U2 Pro has 16” (40 cm) spoked wheels and 4” (10 cm) wide all-terrain fat tires with medium-depth tread. This wheel size and off-road tire should make the U2 Pro very comfortable and smooth to ride on almost any surface. There’s no need to worry about any rocks or sticks in your path. The U2 Pro should roll right over them with no problems.

The U2 Pro comes equipped with mechanical brakes with 160mm rotors. There are some advantages to having mechanical brakes vs. the more common hydraulic brakes that come standard on most e-bikes. Mechanical brakes are easier to maintain and adjust, and keep costs down. The disadvantage is stopping power. Since most e-bikes and e-scooters of this size are heavy, hydraulic brakes are more desired to stop quickly.

The suspension on the U2 Pro is only in the rear. There are dual 125mm rear-mounted shock absorbers with 56mm of travel. These shocks are somewhat adjustable to select the ride firmness. There isn’t any front fork suspension.
The U2 Pro comes with a front-facing LED headlight and a rear-fender mounted tail/brake light.
The U2 Pro has two seats. One for the rider, and one for a small passenger (up to 110 lbs). Both seats are well-padded. The rider’s seat is height and angle adjustable. The height is adjusted with a no-tool clamp under the seat. The rear-passenger seat is not adjustable, but it is removable to reveal a rear rack for carrying cargo.
Assembly
Assembling the Hiboy U2 Pro Electric Scooter was about as simple as it gets. The scooter comes about 75% assembled, right out of the box. Once unpacked, there are only a few items to attach to the frame. The handlebars are attached to the scooter’s stem easily with the tightening of a single bolt that is already attached to the handlebars. The front fender and headlight are next. Those are attached at the same mounting point under the handlebar stem. Also, with a single bolt and nut. After that, the front wheel is attached with two washers, locking washers, and two captive nuts on either side of the front forks. To finish things up, the seat and kickstand are attached.
The instructions are good enough to follow to assemble the U2 Pro, and Hiboy also has a very good video on YouTube that goes through the step-by-step process. All in all, the assembly took about 30 minutes. Charging the battery for the first time took about 6 hours.
Performance
Overall, the Hiboy U2 Pro Electric Scooter is a blast to ride. It has great speed (see the ride video) and adequate battery life. The throttle response from a standstill is quite good. This would be expected from the powerful 750w rear-hub motor. The motor is somewhat loud. It emits a whirring sound that can be heard over the hum of the knobby tires.
Although the quarter-turn throttle is adequate and quite responsive, my wrist got a little worn out when I had to crank the throttle back for long periods of riding. A thumb throttle would have been a better choice for an e-scooter.
The U2 Pro had pretty good battery life. I was able to get about 25 miles (40 km) on a full battery. Although this is lower than the stated 34 miles (54 km), I am a heavier rider, and I took the U2 Pro off-road quite a bit. The battery indicator on the display shows the level of the battery in a 5-segment bar. I prefer a more precise percentage indicator of battery level. I also noticed that under load, the battery indicator would drop a bar, and then when the throttle was released, the battery level would rise back up. I have noticed this on almost all of my e-bikes.
Riding the U2 Pro off-road was very good. That’s something you can’t say on most other e-scooters. The rear suspension is bouncy and smooths out the bumps and dips when off-road or riding over transitions on pavement. However, you feel the lack of front suspension. My back will be saved by the rear shocks, but I felt it in my shoulders.
The brakes on the U2 Pro are adequate for the size and weight of this e-scooter. Although hydraulic brakes would be better for larger riders or when carrying a passenger, the mechanical brakes get the job done.
The rider’s seat is wide and has a thick cushion, but it is on the firmer side. Long rides may be a little uncomfortable. The seat can be swapped out with any seat made for bicycles. The rear pad can be used as a seat, but it is thin. The U2 Pro does not come with any foot pegs for a rear passenger. If the rear passenger is tall enough, they can put their feet on the deck. I will probably buy some foot pegs to add for passengers with shorter legs.
On all my e-bikes, I have added at least one rear-view mirror. I have added one to the U2 Pro also. The loud hum of the knobby tires and the whirring of the motor may hide any car that might be behind you.
The handlebars are at the perfect angle and height. Being able to fold them down would be a nice addition to make the U2 Pro a little better to pack away and transport in a van or trunk.
Final thoughts
Riding the Hiboy U2 Pro Electric Scooter has been a great experience. For simple running around, whether for errands, light grocery runs, or just getting down to the park, the U2 Pro is perfect. The quick response of the throttle with the powerful motor makes it as fun and exhilarating as an e-bike. Riding off-road as well as on pavement makes the U2 Pro a versatile form of transportation. The lack of gears, a chain, or pedals makes it about as simple as you can get. And lastly, the fat tires make it comfortable and steady on almost any riding surface.
