ChargeASAP UFP Review 15

REVIEW – I pack a lot of electronics when I travel for work, and am responsible for a small army of gadgets when traveling with the family.  One of my least favorite rituals is the mad dash while leaving home or the hotel to make sure that each device has a charger accounted for.  Chargeasap has a high capacity power bank that can power up to six devices at once, and could be the only charging system you need in your luggage.

What is it?

The Flash Pro Ultra by Chargeasap is a high capacity, high output power bank capable of charging up to six devices simultaneously.  At 25,000 mAh capacity, it is TSA approved for carry on luggage, and weighs just over a pound (1.3lb / 590g).  In addition to USB-C and USB-A output, it has a magnetic wireless charging pad and a charging pad for either an Apple or Samsung watch.

Chargeasap has been developing innovative charging solutions since 2015, and have had twelve crowdfunding campaigns that have shipped.

Design and features

Out of the box I was immediately impressed with the design of the Flash Pro Ultra.  It’s relatively light for what it has packed into the case, and despite the larger-than-typical feature set for a power bank, it maintains a clean design.

For interface, there are two buttons on the left side.  A yellow button at the top for the OLED display and a release button for the wireless charging pad.  The power button needs to be pressed twice to turn on the watch charging pad, and the phone charging pad will turn on automatically when a device is placed on it.  With the OLED screen on, a single press will cycle through the two available screens.

At the top of the Flash Pro Ultra is where we find the three USB-C and single USB-A ports, all of which can be used simultaneously.

140W USB-C: Charges large laptops like the 16″ MacBook Pro or Dell XPS at full speed

100W USB-C: Ideal for tablets and smaller laptops

60W USB-C: Great for flagship phones and extra devices

60W USB-A: Wide compatibility for headphones, speakers, and more

15W MagSafe-compatible wireless charging: For iPhones, Androids, AirPods & Qi devices

Watch wireless charging pad: Keeps your Apple or Samsung Watch powered up*

*Gadgeteer note: these are not interchangeable… you need to specify which watch type you have when buying the Flash Pro Ultra

ChargeASAP UFP Review 4

The Flash Pro Ultra supports pass through charging – meaning you can charge the power bank while also powering up to five other devices as there isn’t a dedicated charging port.  Using a 140W power supply, the Flash Pro Ultra charges to 85% in 30 minutes, and a full charge can be achieved in 70 minutes.

Performance

For a power bank, I’m more or less looking for it to do what it says it does.  Over the past month I’ve put the Flash Pro Ultra through it’s paces, and it’s done a great job of keeping up.

Chargeasap has put some obvious thought into the layout of the Flash Pro Ultra, despite having four output ports at the top, they are well spaced and don’t get cramped when in use.

The big differentiator of the Flash Pro Ultra is the wireless charging pads, especially the watch pad.  I found them both to be well executed, and the ability to elevate the phone pad to make sure there is clearance for the watch is a nice touch.  The pad does not need to be extended to be used.

A design improvement over the Flash Pro Plus is seen here in the Ultra, as the watch pad has a divot to allow the watch to sit with good contact to the charging base.

The mag-safe compatible mount works well and will put your iPhone into StandBy for a familiar alarm clock experience when on the road.

The OLED displays provide pertinent information at a glance across two screens:

Screen one:

  • Capacity %
  • Time to depletion at current load
  • Temperature
  • Input charging status
    • Toggle icon, on or off
  • Wireless watch charging pad
    • Toggle icon, on or off

Screen two:

  • Output wattage of four output ports
    • Does not display output wattage for wireless pads

When the power bank is low, the main display flips to high-contrast which helps draw attention to the battery status.  While the displays are crisp, I do wish they were just a touch brighter though the trade off probably isn’t worth it for the higher consumption rate to power them.  As is, they get washed out by any direct light pretty easily.

As a replacement charger, the wireless charging pads again make this device easy to appreciate as an all-in-one solution.  While on the road I can pack a single power supply and use the pass through charging to top everything off overnight.  Having the battery backup capability just becomes an added bonus at that point.

For charging the Flash Pro Ultra, Chargeasap sells a power brick separately which supports the max 140W input.  They didn’t include one with my review sample, so I used a 135W GAN brick that I had on hand.  With that, I found the charging claims to be pretty close to accurate at both the 85% (35 min) and 100% (70 min).  It’s important to note that not all USB-C cables are built the same, and some may cap out at lower power delivery capability than others.  If you’re not seeing the speeds you expect, start with the cable, and don’t ask how I learned this ;).

The only dig I have on the Flash Pro Ultra is that the plastic used on the case seems to be pretty soft and prone to scratches.  I don’t see this impacting performance, and wouldn’t want there to be a weight penalty for a heavier material, but worth a note.

Final thoughts

Overall, I’m pretty impressed with what the Flash Pro Ultra can do.  This isn’t the first high capacity, high output power bank on the market, but it’s the only one I’m aware of with a comparable feature set.  I haven’t had any surprises with it over the past month.

So, does the Flash Pro Ultra make sense as an all-in-one charging solution?  For me the data suggests it is when compared to my current power delivery loadout:

Four separate chargers – 1lb 6.5oz

  • Apple 96w (single USB-C output)
  • Apple 35w (dual USB-C output)
  • Apple watch magnetic fast charger
  • Anker PowerPort III 60w (dual USB-C output)

Chargeasap – 2lb 1oz

  • Flash Pro Ultra 275w (5-6 device output)
  • 135w GAN charger w/cable

So for a weight penalty of about eleven ounces, and a nearly identical packing footprint, you get a 25,000 mAh battery bank – seems like a good trade to me.

What I like about the Chargeasap Flash Pro Ultra

  • High capacity, high output power bank
  • Wireless charging pads for a phone and watch, and OLED displays for accurate status at a glance
  • Lightweight and performs exactly as claimed

What needs to be improved?

  • Screen could be a little brighter
  • Finish is easily scratched
