REVIEW – I love several genres of music, instrumental smooth jazz, and Latin jazz. I have been an audiophile for years. While I have owned very expensive audiophile headphones, I have learned to appreciate not-so-expensive headphones that still offer good sound for a good price, making them a great bang for the buck. JLab is a brand that has long been associated with budget-friendly audio gear, and I am happy to have this opportunity to test and review the JLab Epic Lux Lab Edition ANC Over-Ear Headphones.

Design and features

The JLab Epic Lux Lab Edition ANC Over-Ear Headphones feature a sleek, minimalist design that I have not seen on many other headphones. The earcups are foam and covered in faux leather. They are comfortable, foldable, and can rotate. The padded headband is also comfortable and features the usual adjustment capability.

On the right earcup are the touch and button controls that allow you to swipe or touch to manage playback, volume, and calls. You also have access to these controls, along with the ability to customize via the JLab App. The headphones can be charged using the included wireless charging pad or via the USB-C port. The USB-C port can also be used with the USB-C to 3.5mm cable for wired listening.

Performance

Jlab headphones 24
The JLab Epic Lux Lab Edition ANC Over-Ear Headphones have been a wonderful personal experience. No matter the genre, these headphones deliver an impressive audio performance. The soundstage is rich and well-balanced, and the ability to customize EQ settings through the JLab app adds to the versatility and performance of these headphones. The active noise cancellation is responsive and adapts well as I move around my home and into spaces where the ambient sounds change. Call quality is good for both parties, and the battery is nothing short of amazing. I have been using these headphones for approximately 5 weeks, between 30 minutes and 2 hours at least 5 nights each week. The battery life is still being reported via the voice announcements as full. The comfort and softness of the earcups add to the enjoyment when listening to my favorite music.

Although these are not in the sub $100 category series I have been testing, I kept the same playlist for my full evaluation. As usual, I listened to tracks like “All in Love is Fair,” “Distant Lover,” and “I Want You” by Michael McDonald. Next, on the list, I listened to “Europa” by Gato Barbieri, “Winelight” by Grover Washington Jr., and “Angela (theme from ‘Taxi’) by Bob James. I also enjoyed Gregory Isaacs, Beres Hammond, and Mariah Carey. I finished with the Flamenco genre with tracks like Govi’s Andalusian Nights.

I was not sure if I would like the touch and swipe controls that manage all the functions of these headphones, but I was wrong again. They are responsive, easy to use, and well implemented to complement the minimalist design. Bluetooth connectivity is solid, and I like the dual connectivity capability. The only weakness I observed with the JLab Epic Lux Lab Edition ANC Over-Ear Headphones is that they are not consistent with the play/pause feature when I would remove and replace the headphones.

Otherwise, these headphones rival others that cost much more. Very well done!!
