REVIEW – Building kits and models have always drawn my attention, but once the item is put together, I struggle finishing the pieces with paint and other details. I loved the 3D wooden kits that were prefinished as a kid, but as an adult, they were way too simple to keep me entertained for long. When I saw that ROKR made sophisticated wooden prefinished models for adults, I jumped at the chance to try one. The Dream Gift Factory Wooden Music Box piqued my interest because it was not only a challenging build, but it also included lights and a motor. I had a ton of fun putting it together and the result was a fun festive decoration!

Design and features
This music box is adorable. The tunes it plays isn’t distinctly Christmassy so it isn’t annoying. The lights in the production sign flash, the tree spins and the machine spits out wrapped presents. I love how the more you look at the factory, the more fun tiny details you can find.
On the left side of the factory there are two double doors that are able to opened and there is a elf hanging out next to a glowing fireplace while on the second floor there is an elf peeking out the window.
The back side has a door that slides open that actually triggers another elf to slide forward towards the door.
The whole thing is powered by a USB-C cable (not included). The touch power button located on the front porch. The first touch will turn it on with both music, lights and motor while the second touch will turn off the music and leave the lights and motor running. A long touch will turn the factory off.
Assembly, Installation, Setup
Building the gift factory was pretty simple. The instruction booklet comes in five different languages and almost completely relies on images. Areas are color coded and screw sizes are printed 1:1 so there is no guessing. Each step has the parts needed listed in a column on the left side so there is no need to search through the assembly image to figure out what ones are needed.
I found that punching out all of the pieces I needed for each step before starting really helped to increase my productivity. Each piece is clearly labeled either on the piece itself it it is hidden away inside the box or with a line pointing to the piece if it is a finished external piece. Each sheet is labeled with a letter and and then with a number making finding the pieces easy.
A few of the pieces did need sanding to remove the tiny connection piece, especially on the edges that faced outwards. This was easy as they do include a piece of sand paper as well as an emery board. There are also a pair of angled nail clippers that work wonders on any tiny splinters left behind.
While most of the music box is held together by pressing wood pieces together, the electrical parts are screwed in and the main gears are set on metal rods. This just adds stability and reinforces the moving parts of the piece.
I do advise having a tiny bit of glue handy just in case a piece snaps. I only had three pieces break on me but they were easily glued back together and aren’t noticeable at all in the finished piece. The pieces that did break were also very thin pieces, so I wasn’t surprised that they gave away. There are many spare pieces included so depending on what piece breaks it may be possible to just use a different one. One complaint I do have is that this is not mentioned anywhere in the instructions, so during the building process, I was quite confused as to why I had tons of one piece but just exactly enough of another.
Performance
When turned on, the dream gift factory is a whimsical little music box. The belt with toys moves smoothly with just a little bit of scratching noise. This noise isn’t noticeable when the music is turned on but it can be heard when the music is turned off. Everything else moves and spins wonderfully with no sticking or rubbing.
Final thoughts
I absolutely loved putting the ROKR Dream Gift Factory Wooden Music Box together. The end result is cute and decorative while being functional and sturdy. It was a difficult yet relaxing build with nearly no mishaps. If you are looking for a functional display piece, I definitely recommend looking into ROKR. Personally, I will be buying from them in the future.
