Design and features
My wife is from Madagascar. When she arrived in the USA, she was dismayed at the lack of fresh pineapple and mango juice. We will drive substantial distances to find “the good stuff,” we were often shocked at the expense, additives, and, my goodness, so much hype! $14.50 for 16 ounces is wild.
I suppose you could make the argument, “You get what you pay for, Dave,” but for me, watching someone spend ten seconds putting water, ice, and a few paltry chunks of fruit in a blender, then cheerfully asking for $35 while wiggling a tip jar is utterly infuriating. Especially when buried in my pocket is a grocery receipt paying $1.98 for a whole, fresh pineapple, $1.19 for amazing mangos, and $5.97 for a 4-lb bag of oranges. My engineer brain was overloaded, sparks and smoke wisped from my ears, and I cracked a molar from gnashing my teeth.
A few months later, my resulting “ruffled dander” had not gone unnoticed, and we received a high-quality juicer as a Christmas gift from our kids (thank you SO MUCH!). We use it frequently, and my Mrs. loves a glass of juice, but I must keep telling myself, “You are a good husband… You are a good husband…” because I hate to clean that darn thing! It’s shockingly fast and can pulverize a bag of carrots faster than Bugs Bunny, but after less than 60 seconds of cat-startling, ear-splitting racket, I had to spend the next half hour disassembling and cleaning the blasted thing. My wife’s resulting kiss on the cheek always makes it worthwhile, but, gosh, is there a better way?
Hmmm. Could my “wallet pain” and “happy-wife-happy-life” thoughts have skewed my perceptions of the infamous “$14.50 juice incident?” Was the bulk of the cost of our fruity drinks truly the half-hour that cheerful young woman spent muttering curses while sanitizing that fancy blender? Aah, many are the joys of post-event analysis in my OCD cerebral processor!
Revelation moment: Dang it! I should have put a few more dollars in that stinkin’ jar!
When Julie, The-Gadgeteer.com’s editor, emailed Hurom’s H70 Easy Clean Juicer was available for review, my “spider-sense” tingled, and the operative term “Easy Clean” made me giddy. My first thought was, “Holy cow, that thing is expensive,” but the “instantly-100%-awake” feeling of an ice-cold shower and the memory of those $14.50 drinks slapped me across the face.
The question: “Is $599 worth it for a juicer?”
The subsequent question: “How much do you like your wife to kiss you on the cheek?”
The obvious answer was, “Julie, I would like to review this, please.” Two weeks later, the H70 arrived in a large, surprisingly heavy box.
Generally, the first step in every review is to RTFM (Read The Flipping Manual). After the first few pages, I had a sinking feeling – Ooh, that’s a lot of parts. How easy will cleaning be? We shall see…
The motorized base is heavy and stable
Air vents for cooling are on the bottom, so don’t get it wet during cleaning.
The IBM-style cord socket and switch are on the same side.
The hopper lid opens easily and holds a generous amount of the pre-juiced material.
An auger at the bottom of the hopper scoops material into the macerator.
A removable, latched, sealing spout dispenses juice.
There is a seal around the spout cover.
At 90° from the juice spout is a cleverly designed hinged pulp outlet.
Inside the macerator chamber is a mating pair of stocky parts that Huron calls the “Multi-Screw.” These parts chop the materials into small bits.
When fully assembled, it’s a tall, heavy beastie.
It’s very tall and barely fits under my cabinets.
For the inaugural run, I loaded the hopper with fresh pineapple. I left the pieces large to observe how the H70 performs. The operation was quiet, and I was not disappointed.
As the pineapple was being ground, dry pulp exited the outlet
Captured juice stays inside until the spout opens.
After processing, there was very little material left. Here’s the disassembled hopper and Multi-Screw assembly.
Same for the Multi-screw.
Only a tiny bit of juice remained for cleanup.
A little pineapple pulp lodged in the exit, but it’s easily removed.
Moisture content in the extruded pulp was minimal.
The H70 extracted about twenty ounces of juice (with a pleasant amount of pulp) from a single pineapple. My wife said it was the most delicious juice since leaving Madagascar. Yum!
I’m thrilled to report that cleanup is enjoyable and easy. The parts snap or clip together, and everything rinses without residue. The entire process took less than five minutes. I left the H70 parts on the counter to dry overnight.
Apple juice was equally as yummy!
What I like about the Hurom H70 Juicer
- Easy cleaning. Yay!
- The H70 produces more juice than other models I’ve used.
- Quiet operation
- There are a lot of parts, but it’s easy to clean. Bravo!
- Built like a tank
What needs to be improved?
- The price tag makes it a kitchen luxury, but it’s a fantastic machine!
Final thoughts
As I write this, the Hurom H70 Easy Clean Juicer sits on the kitchen counter, drying from another successful morning. This time, fresh apple juice, as fresh and delicious as my brother and I brought home from a day at the cider mill, flowed into its cup. Sure, the Hurom H70 is a luxury, but the ease of cleaning, not needing to drive for an hour, pay $14.50, and that oh-so-sweet kiss on the cheek makes it a winner! Thanks, Hurom! Excellent job!
