NEWS – To celebrate 4 decades of multi-tools, Leatherman’s Garage innovation team has created the Batch 005 40th Anniversary multi-tool which is built on the FREE technology platform that uses magnets to allow for easy tool deployment. This modern take on Leatherman multi-tools features white Cerakote handles and burnt bronze Cerakote blade and pocket clip, with a beefy MagnaCut steel knife blade that is corrosion resistant and has excellent edge retention. This 40th Anniversary tool also has regular and small bit drivers, spring action needlenose pliers, a saw, wood/metal file, diamond-coated file, edge file, scissors, wire cutters, electrical crimper, awl, can opener, bottle opener, small screwdriver, pry tool, and an impact surface (hammer). The Batch 005 40th Anniversary multi-tool is hand-assembled and tuned in Portland Oregon. Now for the bad news… They only made 1983 of them and they are already sold out. 🙁 But you can read more about it on leatherman.com and you can sign up on the Garage page to be notified when a new release comes out so you can order it before it sells out!

I signed up. I waited close to a month for the release date. I waited an hour at my laptop for the 9am PST release time. When 08:59:50 second passed, I had one in my cart. . . Then the trouble began. No way to check out, again, and again, by 9:09:00 a.m. sold out was posted on the main product page even with an still device listed in my cart. I waited another 1.5hrs to speak to a customer service rep who told me what boils down to, ” we might be able to send you a coupon later. But it happened to a lot of people so more than likely not!” THE WORST CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE from Leatherman ever.

    1. Sad Leatherman Fan

I had almost the same exact experience. Then I see they’re on ebay for like 3-4 times the normal price (which was kind of outrageous in the first place.) The thing I found funny was that Leatherman sent an email saying “we sold out” like there was ever a doubt they’d sell out of something like that. I was ready right at the time of sale too like you were. Frustrating.

  3. Is there a regular equivalent to this item? As in a non limited edition? I like the blade with the stud for easy use

    1. The Leatherman Arc should be out in the fall and is going to be almost identical to the Garage 5, except that the Arc is expected to be around $100 less expensive

  4. I also waited and was on my computer 5 mins before 9am to place an order. I had it in my cart and it took repeated attempts to check out. At many points the various pages were not loading due to the server being hammered but I was able to secure one ultimately, though my check out finally happened at 9:15am. I’m certain others faced the same problems having to refresh the pages to slowly make it through. I must say it’s a very nice multi tool but the fact that there’s no supply of parts to fix anything makes me more hesitant to use it incase something does. I do wish they would offer their current line up of multi tools with better knife metals. A surge with 30sv or 154cm would be welcome over 420hc.

  5. Like others, I struggled to get through checkout never expecting to make it but eventually I did and received one. I don’t plan to ever use it because Garage items are so rare. I see they command crazy money on eBay but haven’t decided to sell it.
