  2. $170 and no zombie detector? That is excessive. I am quite certain that I can put together a better kit for less than $20.

And what is the deal with matches in survival situation. Get at disposable lighter. It can be used over and over and is pretty fool proof. I found one on a backpacking trip and kept it with my backpacking stove. 15 years later, I still use the same lighter on every backpacking trip. Don’t let the “disposable” label fool you: they have to be manufactured according to some safety standard, which means they don’t leak. I would trust them over a handful of matches.

Yes, having one of these kits is better than nothing, and you may gladly pay $170 at the time. But that doesn’t mean a company should charge $170 for a kit like that.

Yeah, I kinda agree with @meistervu. That’s quite expensive for the items included. I’ll bet most of that was for the machined aluminum box. I put together kits like this in refrigerator containers in Scouts and for backpacking for years. Putting it in a molded billy can would be just fine. The 475 ml version of the MSR billy in the link below is 5″ diameter by 3″ tall, holds almost 10 ounces, and the bail handle locks the lid on. At $16, it would hold the stuff listed, but you’d have to assemble the stuff yourself. And isn’t that what we gadgeteers love to do anyway? 🙂
